FAQ
How many hours are required?
By the first Friday in May, 2008, you must complete
15 hours with the group & 10 service hours on your ownWhat counts for hours?
Group hours:
are any time you spend in activities, meetings, service opportunities, and travel time to/from these group activities. These hours
must be arranged by the group. If you sign up for a group opportunity like Big Brothers Big Sisters or the Utah Symphony where you go on your own, the time still counts as group hours since NHS made the arrangements.
Individual hours:
are any service you initiate on your own. Please do not include anything you are paid to do, applauded for, or otherwise extrinsically rewarded for doing. The idea is to
serve . . . your family, your neighbors, your school, your community, your world! Service you do with other groups
can count toward individual hours.
Can I count hours with other groups or extra individual hours as group hours?
No. Only group activities and service opportunities count as group hours. However, if you have extra group hours, you
may count them toward your individual hours.
How do I record my hours?
Just inside room 227, you’ll find a white filing cabinet. In the top drawer, marked “NHS,” find a 3 X 5 card and a file for you to keep your hours safely stored. On one side of the card, record the DATE, ACTIVITY, and NUMBER of HOURS for all of your group hours; on the other side, write the same information for your individual hours. Be sure your NAME and CLASS (soph., junior, senior) appears prominently on the top of the card. File your card alphabetically, according to your last name, and add hours to your card as you do them.
What if my GPA slips?
You have one quarter of “probation,” according to the national rules. During this quarter, you may earn hours and participate with NHS, but you must also work to raise your cumulative average to meet the requirement by the end of the next quarter. Please speak with Ms. Bishop if you slip so she can work with you.
What if my schedule changes?
If you make changes at the semester, be sure you keep at least ONE honors or AP course and at least FOUR academic (“solid”) classes; three honors/AP courses may substitute for the four solids. If you do not meet these requirements ALL year, you do NOT remain on the national roster (or wear cords, seniors!).
What if I cannot attend a group activity?
That’s expected. Knowing you’re busy, we always offer more hours than we expect you to attend. Last year, for example, we had over 85 group hours available! Come when you can and keep careful watch over your own schedule and hours earned.
What if I cannot attend my team meeting?
We hold three team meetings at the beginning of each month and hope you will attend one of them, even if you cannot make your assigned day. If you still cannot make it, you may want to contact one of your leaders for information on upcoming activities.
How can I find out about group activities & service opportunities?
- Team meetings, the first full week of every month, are the best way to get information, ask questions, and record the hours you earn each month.
- Listen for NHS information on morning announcements.
- Watch the calendar and flyers outside of Ms. Bishop’s room (227) for information and sign-ups.
- Check out NHS’s page on the school website. Click “STUDENTS” then follow the NHS link.
