Concert Orchestra 1-8 (grades 9-12) (1700)
Membership in the concert orchestra provides opportunities for the serious music
student to become acquainted with the best music literature. Members study standard
symphonic works, symphonies and contemporary orchestral literature while perhaps
being called on to perform at numerous concerts and festivals, accompany the
school musical and perform at commencement exercises. Prerequisite: Teacher
approval.
Theory and Harmony 1-4 (grades 11-12) (1910) (1920)
The study of harmony is extended to include modulation, altered chords, secondary
dominants, chords of the augmented sixth and seventh chords with emphasis placed
on the use of repetition, imitation and sequence in melody writing; practice
in transposing from one key to another is practiced. Students are encouraged
to write more freely for vocal and instrumental groups. Prerequisite: Theory
and Harmony 1-2 (1910) for Theory and Harmony3-4 and/or teacher approval.
Theory and Harmony AP 1-2 (grades 10-12) (1940)
Participants develop the ability to recognize and understand basic materials
and processes of music that are heard and read in musical scores. They study
intervals, scales, chords, metric/rhythmic patterns and terms used to describe
these elements of music, which are related to the major-minor tonal system.
Students study composition, arranging, harmonic analysis, structural analysis,
ear training, some keyboard harmony and diction. Students may receive up to
12 hours credit at some colleges for successful completion of the AP exam. Prerequisite:
Completion of entry-level theory courses and/or passing of a placement test
and teacher approval.
Guitar 1-6 (grades 9-12) (1640)
This course emphasizes the development of music reading skills, the understanding
of basic music theory, the development of guitar skills, the playing of chords
and melodic techniques. Students learn to perform songs with chordal accompaniments
and to play simple guitar solos. Students must provide their own acoustic guitars.
Jazz Ensemble 1-8 (grades 9-12) (1670)
This special instrumental ensemble offers experience in playing the more intricate
and complex rhythms and harmonies characteristic of the jazz idiom. Sight-reading
and improvisation skills are important in this class and will be developed to
an advanced level. Students will usually perform one to a part and have unusual
opportunities to develop individual music skills. Enrollment in band or orchestra
is strongly encouraged as this class moves beyond the traditional realms of
music. Therefore, a continued reinforcement of fundamental skills is essential.
A high level of commitment is needed to meet performance and rehearsal requirements.
Prerequisite: Successful audition and/or teacher approval.
