Congratulations for taking a music class! You are here to learn more music and performance. For these to happen, you must respect others and be responsible for your own actions. The rules in the classroom are:
1. BE ON TIME TO CLASS
2. KEEP YOUR HANDS AND FEET TO YOURSELF
3. COME TO CLASS EVERY DAY PREPARED
Granite District feels that the fine arts are an important part of every student's education. General music is included as part of the fine arts exploratory. This course focuses on the history of music and it's place in society as well as the cultural differences in national music. The music of Hollywood and Broadway in included as well as the musical culture of Western Europe on which our music is based. Careers in music and related fields are also explored.
The class fee for this course is included in the fee for the Fine Arts Exploratory.
Students are expected to have a notebook specifically for this class, and a pen or pencil every day. Since we meet in the Music Room students will find a binder, clip board or other writing surface helpful.
DAILY WORK - 30% OF THE FINAL GRADE.
QUIZZES - 30% OF THE FINAL GRADE.
Since much of this class is on listening skills, students are expected to listen and take notes during class. Tests are all open notebook.
WRITTEN PAPER OR PRESENTATION - 20% OF FINAL GRADE.
Each term students will choose a composer and write at least one paper two double spaced typewritten pages or 500 words long. Oral Presentations and Computer presentations may also be included in this area of study. Computer presentations must include appropriate audio for which copyright has been obtained. At least one reference must be listed in appropriate Bibliography form. For extra credit as many as three additional papers can be turned in.
LISTENING - 20% of final grade.
Students will listen to classical or jazz (include link here for list of radio stations playing acceptable music) for 20 minutes each week and report on the appropriate form. Other music can be counted for credit WITH PRIOR APPROVAL ONLY. Attendance at any live performance will be given double credit if the program is turned in with the listening form. Listening forms are available in the music room and must be signed by a parent or guardian for credit. Additional listening time can be used to make up for absences. This must be done regularly.
Citizenship grades will be based on compliance with the expectations in the school citizenship policy. Any deliberate sluff will result in 0 citizenship for the term.
My consultation period is 1st and 7th periods.
Because music is a participation class attendance is critical. Many classroom experiences cannot be re-created. You are expected to come prepared to participate every day. If you are well enough to attend school you are well enough to participate.
One purpose for including performing arts in the curriculum is to promote understanding of the efforts of others to perform. This class will also help you understand how and why music developed. Your participation is required for you to do this. Excused absences such as illness will require a makeup activity. This can be increased listening time or an additional paper or presentation.
Granite District and Brockbank School Citizenship and Tardy Policy will be followed.
