Orchestra is the class where students learn to play the stringed instruments of the Orchestra.
Violin, Viola, Cello and String Bass are those instruments.
Some Violas, Cellos and Basses are available to rent from the school but students must have their own violin or rent one from another source. All students should plan to carry their instrument back and forth between school and home since daily practice is a requirement for the class.
Cadet Orchestra and Concert Orchestra are offered for 8th and 9th graders. 7th graders can take Orchestra as their elective.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DISCLOSURE
Congratulations for taking a music class! You are here to learn more about performance and to have an opportunity to perform for an audience. For these to happen, you must respect others and be responsible for your own actions. The rules in the classroom are:
1. BE ON TIME TO CLASS
2. KEEP YOUR HANDS AND FEET TO YOURSELF
3. ABSOLUTELY NO GUM WILL BE ALLOWED DURING REHEARSAL TIME
4. COME TO CLASS EVERY DAY PREPARED
Because music is a participation class attendance is critical. Many classroom experiences cannot be re-created. You are expected to come prepared to participate every day. If you are well enough to attend school you are well enough to participate.
Attendance at performances and rehearsals are a required part of your grade. One purpose for including performing arts in the curriculum is to promote teamwork and cooperation. Your participation is required as part of the team. Excused absences such as illness will require a makeup activity. Dance classes, music lessons, baby-sitting, parties, athletic events and practice for other activities are not considered excused absences from performances. Granite District and Brockbank School Citizenship and Tardy Policy will be followed.
Final grades will be based on the following scale.
93 - 100 = A
89 - 92 = A-
85 - 88 = B+

The class fee for this course is $10.00. Please
make checks to Brockbank Music. This is paid in the office.

please see the Choice Board in the classroom.
CLASS PARTICIPATION - 30% OF GRADE
50 points per class will be earned for being prepared with music and instrument and participating during class time. Excused absences or not being prepared can be made up with increased practice time, 60 minutes for each class missed. Attendance at dress rehearsals and concerts is mandatory. Attendance at performances by other Brockbank performing groups is desired and will result in extra credit when reported on the appropriate form.
REGULAR PRACTICE - 35% OF GRADE
This is earned by practicing 15 minutes per day, 5 days a week and tracked on correct practice chart. The chart must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian before it is handed in at the end of each term. Additional practice time results in extra credit. With prior approval credit can be allowed for listening as outlined on listening time forms.
A WELL WRITTEN PAPER OR PRESENTATION - 25% OF GRADE
This paper is due ANY TIME BEFORE MIDTERM each term. It must be two double spaced typewritten pages long or 500 words if hand written. The topics for this paper are:
7th Grade: How the student's instrument developed or was invented or a history of their instrument's family group.
8th Grade: What music has been written for their instrument or a biography of a composer of music for their instrument.
9th Grade: How their instrument is repaired or a biography of a musician who plays their instrument.
One or more references must be listed in appropriate Bibliography form.
At the end of each year students will have completed at least 8 pages on the assigned topic to be filed in a portfolio.
ONE SOLO PER QUARTER - 10% OF GRADE
This is performed for the class or for me privately. These solos can be auditions for solo and ensemble concert or for the District Jr. High Solo and Ensemble Festival. Concert attendance is sometimes allowed to fill this requirement.
Citizenship points are based on compliance with the expectations in the school citizenship policy. Any deliberate sluff will result in 0 citizenship credit for that term.
