Improving Student Achievement by Improving
Teacher Practice
Rationale:
Brockbank's staff has varied levels of proficiency
integrating instruction to improve literacy. Not only is there a spectrum
of expertise, but also diversity in needs. Even though we want everyone
to work on the same areas for improvement, it does not make sense to
have a project that is "one-size-fits-all." To affect the
quality of teaching at our school most effectively, teachers should
evaluate their content and the learning strategies needed by their students
and develop individual plans to improve their own teaching practice
and take time to reflect and analyze the effectiveness of their actions.
Project Overview:
Teachers will create a professional portfolio that
will contain evidence of professional growth to improve student achievement
in literacy by implementing teaching strategies learned from L.I.F.E.
training.
Portfolios should include:
- Lesson
Plans for Embedded Practice of Content Area Reading for each teaching
strategy implemented. (Up to 2 for each quarter or a total of 8)
- Evidence of implementation.
- Examples of things that might be included in
your portfolio as evidence
- Worksheets or scaffolding produced to
implement strategy.
- Examples of student work.
- Data collected to measure student achievement
or progress toward goal.
- An anecdotal journal of class activities.
- A record of reflection of the effectiveness of strategy
implemented using the P.I.N.S.
Strategic Lesson Reflection forms given in LIFE training.
