FAQ's
What can the student put in the display? The display board and the project data book (logbook). Students may NOT bring equipment, containers, computers, bottles, samples, plants etc... Check page 10 of the Handbook for more details. Click here to see a sample of what should be in the display.
How big can my display board be? Your tri-fold board should be about 44x33 inches (which is the size available for purchase from GSD--this is so that students from all income levels can participate). If your project is an inch or two different, that will be OK. There is not space for giant displays.
When do I need to register for the district fair? Winners of school fairs should get application materials from their school science fair coordinator. No materials will be sent to the student's home. Schools must submit the forms as a group before the end of the workday on the 25th of February, 2008.
I am using humans or animals in my project, where do I put the IRB approval form? You should make a copy to keep and put the original with your application form and send it in to the district. If you have permission slips or other forms you collected from test subjects, they should be in the data book. If you need copies of these forms, they are on pages 14-17 of the handbook.
Can my family come to the fair? Yes. An open house will be from 4:00 until about 5:15pm. Awards for 5th and 6th graders will be in the auditorium at 5:30. Awards for 7th-9th graders will be at 6:30 pm. Families are not permitted in the judging area from 9:00am-4:00pm (but they are welcome to sit on the bleachers while they wait for the open house).
What should I do at the science fair? You will check in at the front desk and get a table assignment. You need to stay with your project during your judging session so that you don't miss the judges. You should bring something to do while you wait (such as a book or magazine or drawing paper or homework). You also might want to bring a snack. You should not leave the gym and wander the halls of the school--Lincoln Elementary is in session. After you have been judged by two judges, you are free to leave with your parent and then come back for the open house and awards assembly.
