DRESS CODE POLICY
2007 - 2008
PURPOSE AND PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of a Dress Code is to create an environment where ALL students can feel safe and the focus of their attention is on learning.
The administration of Churchill Jr. High School recognizes that dress and grooming affect the behavior of students, that there are sanitation and safety factors directly relates to proper dress and grooming, and that school administrators, teachers, and parents need clear dress code and grooming guidelines so that rules of dress and discipline can be enforced consistently.
A CLOTHING IN GENERAL
∙ Clothing should be modest and clean.
∙ Clothing and hairstyles that are deemed as conspicuous, hazardous, extreme, draws attention, or tends to disrupt or interfere with the learning atmosphere at school will not be allowed.
∙ Vulgar, indecent, obscene or insulting slogans, profanity, sexually explicit, physical violence (including professional wrestling) and advertisement or anything (message, pictures, cartoons, etc.) that promotes disrespectful attitudes are prohibited on any clothing.
∙ Numbers on clothing that are deemed inappropriate, have a double meaning, or are gang related, as determined by the Salt Lake Gang Task Force, will not be tolerated, i.e. (Letter X, numbers 69, 4:30, 14, 13, 8:40, 05, 31, 41) also FUBU & PLAYERS.
∙ “See Through” clothing or holes in clothes must NOT be worn, Fabric must be thick enough so it cannot be see through.
∙ Students may not rely on coats or jackets as a means of complying with the dress code.
∙ Underwear is to remain true to its name, “worn under regular clothing”. (No
boxers etc. may be worn over regular clothing.)
B BODY
∙ The body is to be kept clean and free of ink.
∙ Body decoration that draws undue attention to a student or disrupts the learning atmosphere at school will not be allowed.
∙ Body piercing and tattooing by students, at school, is not allowed.
C TOPS
∙ Shirts/tops must have sleeves. This goes for both boys and girls.
∙ Blouses/shirts for both boys and girls are not to be revealing i.e. tank tops, french cuts, midriff baring, spaghetti straps are not permissible. No clothing which reveals underwear is permissible. Cleavage must be covered.
∙ Shirts/tops must be long enough for the midriff to remain covered during regular movement.

D BOTTOMS
∙ All shorts, skirts and jumpers must be worn no more than 1 inch below the fingertips when arms are at side of person.
∙ Skirts with a slit must have the top of the slit no more than 1 inch below the fingertips when arms are at side of person.

E FOOTWEAR
∙ Bare or stocking feet are not allowed.
∙ Footwear must be worn at all times.
∙ Bedroom or house slippers are not acceptable.
F BELTS, JEWELRY AND ACCESSORIES (These items will be confiscated)
∙ Chains are not allowed at school. Chains such as, but not limited to, neck, wallet, waist belt, etc. are not allowed at school.
∙ Belts must be fitted to the waist of the wearer, properly sized and tucked into ALL available looping. Buckles must be plain and free of monograms, initials and/or designs including pictures.
∙ Jewelry such as, but not limited to, chains, collars with nails, bracelets with spikes are not permitted.
∙ Clothing attachments or accessories which could be considered weapons, including but not limited to, spikes on boots, bracelets or chokers, chains on wallets or belts are not permitted.
∙ Clothing, medallions, pins or jewelry with suggestive double meanings, vulgar or obscene language, the promoting of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, violence, or anything the administrations deems inappropriate for the learning environment are not permissible.
G HAIR
∙ All students shall wear their hair in a clean and well groomed manner.
∙ Extreme, distractive or intimidating hairstyles or colors that are unnatural are prohibited.
∙ Curlers in your hair are not appropriate for school.
H HEAD WEAR
∙ Eye wear (contacts) must be natural and not distract from the learning environment.
∙ Hats, sunglasses, bandannas, hair nets, visors and hoods are NOT to be worn on campus.
I COATS
∙ All coats, jackets, wind breakers must be placed in the student’s locker upon arrival to school. Winter coats must not be worn in the classroom.
∙ Trench coats and dusters will not be allowed at school.
Ninth grade students who take Seminary can wear their coats/jackets to walk to and from
the seminary building only.
J ENTERING THE BUILDING
∙ Coats, gloves, mittens, hats, purses, backpacks and scarves must be removed and placed in the student’s locker before going to class.
K PHYSICAL EDUCATION WEAR
∙ Navy blue or black shorts - no logos
∙ Churchill Jr. High P.E. shirt
L GANG APPAREL
∙ Excessively baggy clothing.
∙ Belts worn excessively long in the front and hanging on either side.
∙ Buckles with initials or gang name etched on it.
∙ Baseball hat or other caps with gang symbols, monikers, or insignia on it, particularly on the inside of the brim.
∙ Bandannas or “rags” worn or displayed on a person.
∙ Shirts or apparel with gang symbols, monikers, insignia, colors, or other gang identifiers.
∙ Clothing or apparel displaying Old English style or “graffiti” style writing.
∙ Hair nets.
∙ Knitted gloves.
∙ Sweat bands.
∙ Button shirts with the top button fastened and shirt tails hanging out.
∙ Pants with one let rolled up or shirts with one sleeve rolled up.
∙ Any apparel or style of wearing clothing that the administration, in light of the
totality of the circumstances, and after consultation with law enforcement
authorities, view as denoting gang membership or affiliation.
M ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
∙ Nothing in this code shall be construed as prohibiting the administration or the school from requiring individual students to comply with an up-graded standard. If in the opinion of the administration, the individual’s dress or grooming is harmful or distracting to the education process, the student, will be asked to discontinue wearing said clothing.
∙ The school desires to keep the school campus free from threat or harmful
influence of any groups or gangs which advocate violence, drug use, or disruptive
behavior. The wearing or displaying of any apparel, jewelry, moniker, trademark,
or any other by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute
which implies affiliation or empathy with such group or gang shall not be
permitted.
