Eisenhower Students Raise $6,234
for Victims of Hurricane Katrina
News Release, Taylorsville,
Utah, September 9, 2005
Students and faculty at Eisenhower
Junior High in Taylorsville, Utah, recently came together
to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In less than four
days (September 5-8, 2005) they raised over $3117, which was
matched by Snowbird Ski Resort, for a total of $6234! All
monies were then donated to the American Red Cross.
To raise the money, students
sold breadsticks at lunch time and held a dance--during which
they sold water and snacks. Students also arranged for door
prizes to be awarded at the dance which were donated by local
businesses-including Smith's Food, Jubilee, Taco Time, McDonalds,
Marie Calendars, and Arctic Circle.
Eisenhower students have a history
of being very generous in supporting community needs. In spite
of the fact that over half of Eisenhower's students are below
the poverty level, they've donated thousands of dollars to
various charities during the past several years. In fact,
in 2002 they raised enough money to donate a car to a needy
family. (Click Taylorsville
Kearns Journal for more information on this event.)

Eisenhower Students Participate
in "Light the Night Walk" for Cancer
On
September 17, 2005, over sixty Eisenhower students participated
in the annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "Light
the Night Walk" at Sugarhouse Park, Salt Lake City, Utah.
The evening event celebrated and commemorated people whose
lives had been touched by blood-related cancers.
Participants gathered at Sugarhouse
Park for an evening of entertainment and food and at dusk
walked along a route carrying lighted balloons--white for
survivors and red for supporters. Over $55,000 was raised
by the event, which monies will be used to fund research to
find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma,
and to provide education and patient services for patients
with these diseases and their families. Eisenhower students
were sponsored by ABC4-KTVX Television, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Eisenhower Students break the Guinness
World Record for the Longest
Straw Chain
On Friday, December
16, 2005, students at Eisenhower Junior High School (EJHS)
in Taylorsville, Utah, set a new world record for the Longest
Straw Chain. According to Guinness World Records,
the previous world record for the Longest Straw Chain was
3.87 miles long and was held by a school in Bridgehampton,
New York. However, after school was over on December 16, 2005,
133 ninth grade students at EJHS successfully connected 42,963
standard drinking straws to produce a continuous straw chain
that measured 4.5770 miles (or 24,166.8 feet) in length. The
record took eight hours to achieve, used thousands of red
colored jumbo-sized 7-3/4" drinking straws and hundreds
of red-lined flexible drinking straws.

Eisenhower Students Raise $3,262 for
Michael Vazquez's Funeral Expenses
On April 14, 2006,
Michael Vazquez, an Eisenhower student with special needs,
died suddenly from poor health and complications from surgery.
Eisenhower students quickly and generously responded to his
death by raising $3,262 in two days, which helped pay for
Michael's funeral and burial expenses.
Michael Vazquez's special education
teacher, Ms. Gale Brown, said the following about Michael:
"Michael Vazquez had a way of
putting a smile on everyone's face. Although his speech was
limited, he had tons of friends and had a way of making everyone
laugh. He was a true class clown! Michael was well known for
his imaginary cell phone and head phones, both of which had
to be 'taken away' before he would do his school work. His
favorite classes were P.E. and Art and he excelled in both
of them. Michael's art work was often in the art show, where
he received honorable mentions. Everyone knew of his love
for basketball. He was a big fan of Michael Jordan and often
wrote his name as Michael Jordan Vazquez. Michael touched
many lives. We will miss him greatly and were blessed to have
known him."
