Block Schedule for 2007-2008
Eisenhower will be on a block schedule for 2007-2008. This schedule includes eight periods which allows for additional classes for students as well as longer periods for teaming. It will also include exploratory classes for 7th Graders and some 8th Graders, and additional electives for 8th and 9th Graders.

Exploratories are classes that are shorter in duration, give an overview of the topic and are geared at exposing students to a variety of topics to get their interest so they will have some idea of the types of classes they have interest in and can take in the 8th and 9th Grades. Some of these exploratories will be an extension of the academic classes that will be used to strengthen the students' skills. If you have questions, please contact one of the administrators or the counselors.

Exploratories vs. Electives:
In the National Middle School Association (NMSA)'s publication, This We Believe, educators discuss what a developmentally responsive school looks like. One of the characteristics is that the curriculum be exploratory in nature. The reason for this is "that young adolescents, by nature, are adventuresome, curious explorers." They go on to say that exploration is "the aspect of a successful middle school's curriculum that most directly and fully reflects the nature and needs of young adolescents." They state that the entire curriculum, in fact, should be exploratory in nature. Just because the classes are exploratory doesn't mean they are "non-academic". In fact, the opposite is true. A solid academic class, when taught properly, clearly is exploratory. Exploratory is not a classification of content, but rather it is an attitude or approach to learning.
Middle schoolers deserve opportunities to figure out where their special interests and aptitudes are. They need to engage in activities that broaden their views of the larger world and of themselves at the same time. Exploratory curriculum also has potential career value, can lead to a healthy recreational and leisure time pursuits, enriches life, and helps to contribute to the development of well-rounded and self-sufficient adults.
With this belief in mind, the curriculum we offer to middle schoolers is changing. We still offer the core curriculum that is required by the state and district, but the "elective" choices we have offered for 7th and 8th graders in the past have changed somewhat. For 7th and 8th graders, we are offering two sets of "exploratory" classes. The first we will call Related Arts/Humanities and can include such classes as art, crafts, drama, dance, music, etc. We will refer to this as Exploratory A. Exploratory B will be called Life Applications/Technology and will include such classes as study skills, web design, clothing, foods, life skills, 6 Trait Writing, Big 6 Research, keyboard, etc. These classes will be determined after registration dependent upon teacher availability and certification.
