Dress Code Policy
The purpose of a Dress Code is to create an environment where ALL students can feel safe and the focus of their attention is on learning.
PURPOSE AND PHILOSOPHY:
The Administration of Hunter Jr. High School recognizes that dress and grooming affect the behavior of students, that there are sanitation and safety factors directly related to proper dress and grooming, and that school administrators, teachers and parents need clear dress and grooming guidelines so that rules of dress and discipline can be enforced consistently.
Clothing in General:
- Clothing should be safe, clean and modest.
- Clothing and hairstyles that are deemed as conspicuous, hazardous, extreme, draws attention, or tends to disrupt or interfere with the learning atmosphere at school will not be allowed.
- Vulgar, indecent, obscene or insulting slogans, profanity, sexually explicit, physical violence (including professional wrestling) and advertisement or symbols for alcohol, tobacco, drugs and/or drug paraphernalia, gangs, or anything (message, pictures, cartoons, etc.) that promotes disrespectful attitudes are prohibited on any clothing.
- Numbers or words on clothing that are deemed inappropriate, have a double meaning, or are gang related, as determined by the Salt Lake Gang Task Force, will not be tolerated.
(i.e. letter X, numbers; 69, 4:30, 14, 13, 8:40, 05, 31, 41, FUBU & PLAYERS, WWF, Taggers, dawg-e-dawg, 8-ball, smile now cry later, Low Rider, Players 69, Big Johnson, ICP)

- Promotion of the superiority of one group over another is not allowed on clothing. (e.g. Tongan Pride, La Raza, Azteca, White Pride, KKK)
- See Through clothing or holes in clothes must NOT be worn. Fabric must be thick enough so it cannot be seen through.
- Students may not rely on coats, jackets, sweaters, hoodies as a means of complying with the dress code. (covering up clothing that does not comply with the dress code)
- Underwear is to remain true to its name (Worn under regular clothing.) (No boxers etc. may be worn over regular clothing.)
- Colors, see L. 14 Gang Apparel
- Clothing/attire/that presents a distraction is not allowed.
- Capes, costumes, distracting prints, clothing related to vampires/occult are not allowed.
- Florescent clothing, jewelry, pacifiers, or other items associated with the use of drugs are not allowed.
- Safety pins may only be worn to correct a problem with your clothing. They are not allowed to be worn as a form of decoration.(safety issue)
- Body:
- The body is to be kept clean and free of ink.
- Body decoration that draws undue attention to a student or disrupts the learning atmosphere at school will not be allowed.
- Body piercing and tattooing by students, at school, is illegal.
- Drug, alcohol, gang, vulgar, indecent, obscene or insulting slogans, profanity, sexually explicit, physically violent tattoos are not allowed.
- Tops: (outer shirt/top)
- Shirts/Tops must have sleeves (Boys or Girls).

- Blouses and shirts, for male and female students, are not to be revealing. i.e. Tank tops, French cuts, midriff baring tops, and tops with spaghetti straps are not permissible. No clothing which reveals underwear is permissible. As a bench mark: Shirts must be buttoned to within 1 and 1/2 inch below collar bone or have a neck line no lower than 1 and 1/2 inch below collar bone. Cleavage must be covered.


- Shirts/Tops, must come up to the arm pit on the sides.

- Shirts/tops must be long enough for the midriff to remain covered during regular movement. This includes sitting down or bending over.

- Bottoms:
- Bottoms must fit appropriately to all parts of the student’s body, be worn at or above the top of the hipbone, with the waistband being properly fitted to the student. Hip huggers may not be appropriate without a top that covers the midriff area.
- All shorts, skirts, and jumpers must be no more than 4 inches above the top of the knee.

- Skirts, with a slit, must have the top of the slit no more than 4 inches above the top of the knee.
- Bottoms must have hemmed legs that do not drag on the floor. (This is a safety issue)
- Overall straps must be fastened up over the shoulder.
- No sagging, oversized pants/shorts allowed. Pants must be worn at the top of the hip.

- Ben Davis and Dickie style of clothing (big/oversized), will not be allowed. See L. 14 Apparel

- Bottoms may not have oversized expandable pockets. (This is a safety issue)
- Spandex and Lycra (clinging tightly to the student’s body), or biking shorts are not allowed.
- Footwear:
- Bare or stocking feet are not allowed.
- Footwear must be worn at all times.
- Bedroom or house slippers are not acceptable.(unless under doctor’s orders or for a special school spirit day)
- Shoes with soles must be worn. No roller sneakers or roller blades allowed.
- Belts, Jewelry and Accessories: (these items will be confiscated)
- Chains are not allowed at school. Chains such as, but not limited to , neck, wallet, waist belt, etc. are not allowed at school.
- Belts must be fitted to the waist of the wearer, properly sized and tucked into ALL available looping. Buckles must be PLAIN and FREE OF MONOGRAMS, INITIALS AND/OR DESIGNS INCLUDING PICTURES. (see gangs #3)
- Jewelry, such as, but not limited to, chains, collars with nails, bracelets with spikes are not permitted. Ear wear that is excessive or dangerous is not allowed.
- Clothing attachments or accessories which could be considered weapons, including but not limited to, spikes on boots, bracelets or chokers, chains on wallets or belts are not permitted.
- Clothing, medallions, pins or jewelry with suggestive double meanings, vulgar or obscene language, the promoting of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, violence, or anything the administration deems inappropriate for the learning environment, are NOT permissible.
- Purses are to remain in the student’s locker and not to be taken to class.
- Hair:
- All students shall wear their hair in a clean and well groomed manner.
- Extreme, distractive or intimidating hairstyles or colors that are unnatural are prohibited.
- Curlers in the hair are not appropriate at school.
- Head Wear:
- Eye wear (contacts) must be natural and not distract from the learning environment.
- Hats, sunglasses, headbands, bandannas, hair nets, visors and hoods are not to be worn on campus.
- Coats:
- All coats, jackets, and wind breakers (thin, 1 ply only) must be placed in the student’s locker upon arrival to school.
- Trench coats and dusters will not be allowed to school.
- Winter coats must not be worn in the classrooms
- Entering the Building:
- Coats, mittens, gloves, hats, purses, backpacks and scarves must be removed upon entering the school. These items must be placed in the student’s locker.
- Physical Education Wear:
- Black shorts or black sweatpants
- White T-shirt or white sweatshirt
- Gang Apparel:
- Excessively baggy clothing.
- Belts worn excessively long in the front and hanging on either side.
- Boy Scout style buckle with the initials of the person or gang etched on it.
- Baseball hat or other cap with gang symbols, monikers, or insignia on it, particular on inside of brim.
- Bandannas, or rags worn on a person or displayed.

- Shirts or apparel with gang symbols, monikers, insignia, colors, or other gang identifiers.
- Clothing or apparel displaying Old English style or graffiti style writing.
- Hair nets.
- Knitted gloves.
- Sweatbands.
- Button shirts with the top button fastened and shirt tails hanging out.
- Pants with one pant leg rolled up or shirts with one shirt sleeve rolled up.
- Color on color is not allowed. (e.g. black shirt and black pants)
- Any apparel or style of wearing clothing that school officials, in light of the totality of the circumstances, and after consultation with law enforcement authorities, view as denoting gang membership or affiliation.
- In addition to the above list, Hunter Jr. High School shall keep a current representative list of items that have been identified by school officials and local police agencies as gang related clothing in the Hunter Jr. community, and shall provide the list to parents upon request.
- Additional Comments:
- Nothing in this code shall be construed as prohibiting the administration or the school from requiring individual students to comply with an up-graded standard. If in the opinion of the administration, the individual’s dress or grooming is harmful or distracting to the education process, the student will be asked to discontinue wearing said clothing.
- The school desires to keep the school campus free from threat or harmful influence of any groups or gangs which advocate violence, drug use, or disruptive behavior. The wearing or displaying of any apparel, jewelry, moniker, trademark, or any other by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute which implies affiliation or empathy with such group or gang shall not be permitted.
- Appeal Process:
Students and parents who wish to appeal the current dress code at Hunter Jr. High, will be allowed on a quarterly basis. A hearing will be held at night before the Hunter Jr. High Dress Code Committee. This committee is composed of students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents. The student must abide by the current dress code until the Dress Code Committee meets to discuss the issue.
