Building Hours
Students are allowed to be in the commons area from 7:00 am until 7:30 am. Students must exit the building by 3:10 pm, unless they under the direct supervision of an adult employee.
Buses
Buses are for those of you who live two or more miles from the school. The bus is for your convenience. The driver is in charge and must have full cooperation from you. If you abuse the privilege of riding the bus, or have behaviors that endanger the lives of your fellow students, you will have your bus privilege revoked.

Change of Address or Telephone
Please notify the Counseling Center (646-5186 ) immediately if there is a change in address, telephone number (home or work), or emergency number. In case of an emergency we must have current information for parents and at least two (2) emergency contacts. Please furnish verification.
Check Cashing Policy
District policy is such that we must limit check cashing to school purchases only. We will accept checks for lunches, shop & CTE funds, and school supplies. Checks should be made to Hunter Junior High for the amount of purchase only. Due to limited funds, the school office cannot make change. A dollar change machine is available in the commons area.
Counseling Center
This is where the counselors reside. The counselors are Ms. Rathke, Ms. Nelson, and Ms.Ofahengaue. They are here to help you with personal problems, schedule problems, and career exploration. Please enter the Counseling Center from the doors off the commons area, and don't bring your backpack.

Closed Campus
You must remain on campus during the school day, including lunchtime. We discourage your parents/guardians from taking you for lunch during school hours. Additional areas considered off campus are behind the gyms and portable classrooms, the parking lots, and the church property, except for students going to and from seminary classes. If you are off campus without permission during school hours, you will be considered truant. Students from other schools corning on school property will be considered trespassing. Excuse notes "after the fact" will not be accepted. You must have a street pass to leave the school campus.

9th Grade basic fee - $45, ($10 refund possible)
Hands-on Science - all grades $10
7th /8th grade must pay a $48 basic fee, $10 of which is refunded at the end of the year with the return of all books in good condition. If you lose, steal, misuse, or abuse a book assigned to you, you will be fined.
7th grade students pay an additional $15 to cover the CTE fee. 7th grade total fee of $63, ($10 refund possible)

Fee Waivers - Fee waiver forms are provided in the main office. Everyone has the opportunity to participate in class and school sponsored activities.
Grade Information - The following information service is available to access student grades and/or attendance data on the Internet. This service requires a student's seven digit Granite District student number.

Hall Passes - You are not permitted in the halls during class periods unless you are accompanied by a teacher or have a hall pass from a teacher (orange vest). You are not to request a hall pass unless it is an emergency situation.
Lost & found - Your lost items may be found in the Counseling Center. It's a good idea to label your coat, books, backpack and other personal items with your full name, in case you lose them.
Lunch/Breakfast - You are encouraged to take advantage of the school lunch program. However, you are welcome to bring a sack lunches. Cafeteria food must be consumed in the commons area. Vending machines are also available to you, and food from these machines must be consumed in the commons area, also. School lunch costs $1.40. Breakfast is $.85 (serving time: 7:15 am - 7:35 a.m.)

Telephone - Office telephones are to be used for official school business and emergencies only. You must have a hall pass and approval from a secretary to use the Counseling Center phone. You will not, as a rule, be called to the phone when classes are in session; however, emergency messages will be delivered promptly. A telephone is available in the main office until 4:00 p.m..
Trespassing & Visitors - All visitors to Hunter Junior High are required to check in with the Counseling Center. Student guests, such as out-of-town visitors, friends, or relatives, are not allowed at school during the regular school day. All visitors to the building must be cleared by the Counseling Center and wear a "visitor's pass."

ATTENDANCE & RELATED INFORMATION The three types of school absences are as follows:
Excused Absence - excused absence include the following: illness, medical emergencies, death of a family member of close friend, or family activity or travel, consistent with district/school policy with a note or phone call from the parent or guardian. A parent may excuse up to 7 full school days a year.
Unexcused Absences - Unexcused absences are absences not authorized by state law or by school or district policy but occur with parental knowledge or consent.
Truancy Absence - Truancy absences are absences that occur without school or parental approval. A teacher or administration determines the consequences for a truancy absence. (Sluff-cutting class)
Attendance marks: The following are marks used on the attendance sheet to represent attendance.

Parents have two (2) weeks to excuse an absence.
Coming to School LATE- When you come to school late and it is during the first period, and you have an excuse note, check into the Counseling Center. (This note excuses you for your absence.) If you do not have a note, you need to check in with your teacher. Anytime after first hour, you need to check into the Counseling Center for an excuse note or an admit slip to class.
Checking into School - When you miss a day of school, you need to bring a note from your parent or guardian to the Counseling Center or your parent may call the Counseling Center (964-7902). You will receive a blue note when the absence is excused. All of your teachers must sign the blue note and you must keep it until the next report card comes out.
Checking out of School - If you are sick, you need to get a note from your teacher to come to the Counseling Center. You may spend one class period in the sickroom or call home. If you are leaving school, a "street pass" is issued. The street pass is the excuse note for the next day for your classes. Your parent or a responsible adult must sign you out in the Counseling Center.
If you are leaving for another reason, (i.e. appointment, etc.), you will need to bring a note from your parent and turn it in to the Counseling Center before school in the morning. You will pick up the "street pass" in the Counseling Center when instructed, and return to the Counseling Center at the appointed time. Your parent will sign you out in the Counseling Center. The "street pass" will be the excuse note for the following day.
Homework Requests - (due to absences) Your parents may request homework when you are absent for three or more days by calling the Counseling Center (964-7902). This homework must be picked up and returned to the teacher on the first day back to school.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & STUDENT CONDUCT
Cheating - Cheating is copying of any type and/or communicating in any way to another student while a test is being given or about a test you will be taking. Cheating is checking homework inaccurately (i.e. reporting 5 wrong when 12 are actually wrong). Cheating on homework or a test will result in a ZERO grade for that assignment. Cheating will result in a loss in grade and citizenship as determined by the individual teacher.
Citizenship Grade - The citizenship grade includes behavior, attendance, punctuality and adherence to the rules and policies of the school. In addition to the academic grades, the following citizenship grades will be rewards: (4)-Honor, (3)-Good, (2) - Satisfactory, (l)-Poor, (0)-Failure.
Please note: Citizenship is a graduation requirement in Granite School District Therefore, it is important for 7th and 8th grade students to develop those skills now so they will be successful when in high school.
Consequences for Disciplinary Actions: Administrative contract, ASD (after school detention - 45 min), Friday School (3 hrs.), clean up with custodians, ISS (in school detention - 1-7 periods), Lunch detention, Suspension (1 period - 3 days), referral to Granite district, referral to law enforcement officer.
Disorderly conduct/School Disruption - You are not to run or scuffle in the building. Pushing in halls or sliding down rails, or anything of annoyance will be considered disorderly.
Disrespect or Defiance - Disrespect or defiance of authority to faculty or staff will not be tolerated and will be dealt with as a severe case. The consequences may include suspension and /or referral to the district.
Dress Code Policy
SHIRTS - Must have sleeves and cover midriff during regular movement and cannot be revealing. PANTS, SHORTS, & SHIRTS - Pants must fit appropriately at the waist. Droopy (sagging) pants or clothing that reveals underwear are not allowed. Pants cannot have expandable pockets. Skirts and shorts need to be no more than four (4) inches above the top of the knee (including slits in skirts). No oversized or tight clinging clothing is allowed. OTHER GUIDELINES - Accessories: Hats or bandanas of any color are not allowed. Chains, gang related objects or emblems are not allowed. Coats must be left in your locker. However, 1-ply windbreakers are allowed to be worn in school. Belt buckles may have no monograms or initials. No sunglasses or excessive eyewear may be worn. Gloves, safety pins or jewelry with double meanings are not allowed. Hair: Only natural colors to humans are allowed and needs to be in a well-groomed, non- distracting manner. Footwear: Bare or stocking feet are not allowed. No slippers or Heeleys (shoes with roller blades in the sole) are allowed Clothing can not display the following: Vulgar, indecent, obscene in insulting slogans, profanity, sexually explicit, physical violence (including professional wrestling) and advertisement or symbols for alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and/or drug paraphernalia, gangs, or anything (message, pictures, cartoons, etc.) that promotes disrespectful attitudes are prohibited on any clothing. Numbers or words on clothing that are deemed inappropriate, have a double meaning, or are gang related, as determined by the Salt Lake Gang Task Force, will not be tolerated, (i.e. Letter X, numbers: 69, 4:30, 13, 14, 8:40, 05, 31, 41, FUBU & PLAYERS, WWF, Taggers, dawg-e-dawg, 8-ball "Smile Now Cry Later", Low Rider, Players 69, Big Johnson) Promotion of the superiority of one group over another is not allowed on clothing: (I.E. Tongan Pride, La Raza, Azteca, White Pride, KKK, etc.) Other: Make-up, body piercing, tattoos or jewelry which presents safety hazards or distractions are not allowed.
Fighting, Threatening, Intimidating, Assault, & Battery - Fighting will not be tolerated at school, on the way to or from school, at any school function, or at school-sponsored activities. This will result in immediate parent contact and administrative action, which will include suspension from school and possible referral to the appropriate police agency and district referral. People who promote, instigate, or encourage fighting will also be deemed responsible and subject to disciplinary actions. You are expected to get along with one another and settle differences and disputes in other ways than fighting. You may want to get assistance from a teacher, counselor or other school adult with this conflict. Fighting, threatening, intimidating, including snowball throwing at school or at school related activities are prohibited. Injuries, damages, and medical costs associated with fighting are you and your parent's responsibility.
Fire Alarms & Evacuations - The faculty & staff at Hunter Jr. High care about your safety and health while at school. When an emergency alarm goes on, you are expected to cooperate with all adult staff members and evacuate the building immediately. Evacuation maps and procedures will be posted in each classroom near the door and will be reviewed by all teachers. If you pull an alarm station without a valid or compelling reason, such as a fire or other endangering situation in the building, you will face police' referral and possible referral to Granite School District.
Harassment - It is the policy of Granite district to maintain learning and working environment, free from sexual and racial harassment or any verbally or physically abusive actions. Remarks that embarrass humiliate are not appropriate. Policy is violated if any student or employee harasses another student or school employee through conduct or communication. You should tell the administration, a teacher or counselor if you feel you have been harassed. All complaints will be investigated and disciplinary procedures will be followed if needed.
Sexual Harassment - is defined as being disturbed persistently by someone because of your gender. While people sometimes differ in what they think is harassing or annoying, the government agencies responsible for enforcing laws against sex discrimination agree that certain behaviors are unlawful. These behaviors can vary from an annoying glance to an attempted or actual physical assault. Such behavior includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Any sexual harassment behaviors are prohibited for students and employees.
Inappropriate Gestures/Language - Any indecent gesture, foul language, act or lewdness, or indecent exposure is contrary to the ideals and standards of the school. The Utah State Legislature has banned obscene language/swearing from school. The teacher or administrator for violations will take appropriate disciplinary action.
Prohibited Items at School - (CELL PHONES) Items which are unsafe and disruptive to the school environment and are easily stolen or lost are prohibited. Items such as weapons, slingshots or other projectile devices or facsimile will be referred to law enforcement officials. Other items such as: cigarette lighters, matches, laser pens, Frisbees, fireworks, pagers, cell phones, elastic bands, water toys and guns, hardballs, skateboards, roller blades, scooters, or other similar things are not allowed at school. Personal items such as electronic games and devices are prohibited at school. We discourage you from bringing any items of value to school such as: baseball cards, irreplaceable photographs, large amounts of money, etc. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items, even if they are stored in gym or hall lockers. Items confiscated by teachers or administrators from you will be returned to your parent/guardian only.
Public Display of Affection - Public displays of affection are inappropriate for a middle school environment and are prohibited.
Safe School Policy - Granite School district has a Safe School Policy designed to encourage regular attendance, student responsibility, a proper learning environment, and self- discipline, while discouraging behavior that is unsafe or disruptive to the school's educational program.
It is important to remind you, your parents, and your guardians that aggressive behavior on school grounds will not be tolerated. This includes: physical abuse, gang activity, intimidation, threats, harassment, any type of criminal behavior, vandalism, and the use or possession of weapons or facsimile weapons, pagers, and cellular phones. Furthermore, the possession of alcohol, tobacco products, drugs, or any illegal item or substance at school also violated Safe School Policy. Being involved in such activities may result in immediate suspension from school and referral to the District Safe School Review Committee and a Police referral.
WEAPONS HOTLINE - (481-7199) All calls are confidential. Please report any information you have concerning . weapons at school.
The Granite School District "School Safety" policy establishes penalties and procedures for: " ' 'Any threat or act of violence. " Possession of any type of weapon (real, look-alike or pretend) " Any form of organized gang activity. " Any type of criminal behavior.
Granite School District Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy - The illegal use, possession, distribution, sale or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, over-the counter prescription medications, or intoxicants of any kind by students is prohibited in all Granite School District schools, on school grounds, at school-sanctioned activities, or when students are being transported in vehicles dispatched by the district. Violations also include student use, possession, distribution or sale of drug paraphernalia, imitation controlled substances or resorting where drugs are being used or possessed.
Suspensions - If you are suspended by the Administration, your parent must accompany you to school in order to be reinstated. Showing up on campus during a suspension is considered trespassing.
Tardy Policy - Tardiness to class can be one of the single most disruptive influences to the classroom. Students, who are excessively tardy to class, may be referred to the office for administrative action.
Vulgar or Profane Language, Pictures, & Gestures - Any vulgar or profane language, pictures, pornography, and gestures or associated actions are inappropriate for any school environment and are prohibited. The teacher or administrator will take appropriate disciplinary action.
STUDENT CONDUCT IN THE BUILDING

Coat, Purse, & Backpack Policy - You are responsible for your personal property and school property assigned to you. Coats & jackets are to remain in your lockers during the school day. You may wear a thin 1-ply windbreaker to your classes and in the halls. You must leave your backpacks and purses in your lockers during the school day and during lunchtime for safety reasons.
Lockers - Lockers are the property of Hunter Jr. High and are issued for student convenience of holding books and supplies. You should not keep money or valuables in lockers as the school cannot be responsible for such items. You should not share your hall or gym locker, or locker combinations with anyone. You do not have the right to privacy in the matter of lockers. This means that administrators may search lockers. Contraband, illegal substances, or stolen property, obscene or offensive pictures or writing, and any type of defacement are prohibited.
Jammed Locker - Jammed lockers are not as important as class attendance. You should report to class on time and receive permission from the teacher before seeking help for a jammed locker. Report a jammed locker to the main office.
