Dear Parents:

As you are aware, national, state, and county health departments are on alert concerning the spread of swine flu (H1N1). The Granite School District has and will continue to work closely with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department to keep your children safe. H1N1 symptoms may include a fever, body aches, cough, sore throat, trouble breathing, runny nose, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In line with CDC guidance, healthy students should be in school.

We are encouraging school principals to monitor students who are absent from school with flu-like symptoms. We will encourage your children to wash their hands often and participate in proper respiratory etiquette. Our staff will keep counters and desk tops sanitized.
If your child is sick, please keep your student home. Please contact your student’s school if your child is experiencing any of the H1N1 symptoms (fever, body aches, cough, sore throat, trouble breathing, runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhea). If the school calls to report your student has become sick while at school, please make timely arrangements to pick-up your student from school.

The Center of Disease Control (CDC) has suggested the following actions we can all take to stay healthy:

  • Practice proper respiratory etiquette by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and by appropriately disposing of the tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Avoid contact with sick people. H1N1 is spread through person-to-person contact.

You can find additional information for parents at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/parents.

If you have questions, please contact your health care provider or call the Salt Lake Valley Health Department’s Information Hotline at 2-1-1, which is available in English or Spanish.

The Granite District is committed to providing a safe environment for students, teachers, and staff.

Parents and Guardians,
I have received a call from a concerned parent regarding the H1N1 or swine flu virus.  We continue to work closely with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department to monitor this disease in our community. Our school and district will act upon any recommendations they provide.

At this point in time, parents should be reassured that our administration and faculty has and will continue to monitor our student body for symptoms of any illness and take necessary precautions to resolving those situations.  Parents should continue to encourage their students to practice proper respiratory etiquette including the frequent washing of hands and covering  the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

We will continue to work with SLVHD in monitoring our attendance and health.  If we have any concerns, or any significant developments, we will notify parents promptly. Please contact me at 801-646-5194 if you have any questions or concerns about your student or any measure that we have taken.

Thank you,

Rick Anthony
Principal

Next week we have our spring dance concert. The school auditorium is not large enough to accommodate the size of audience that attends our dance concert so we offer the performance two nights in a row. Our hope is that by offering it two nights in a row we are able to seat everyone. Please choose one of the nights to attend. They will be held the 29th or the 30th at 7 p.m. Ticket price will be $2.00 for people 12 and older. As with all of our evening performances, students (including high school age students) will need to be accompanied by an adult in order to attend.

Please contact us with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your assistance!

A big thanks to our ensemble choir for singing the national anthem at the Kearns Babe Ruth Baseball opening on Saturday. You did an excellent job.

Students will be given copies of 3rd term grades in advisory today (Monday). Spring break is this Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday. There will be no school these days (April 9, 10, 13).

We mailed out our newsletter last week. If you did not receive a copy, please give us a call and make sure we have your correct address. Also, you can always find the latest news here on the website. Take a look at the school documents provided in the left column.

We have added a new way to communicate with parents and students via text message. Our hope is that this will provide important information and/or reminders to more people. Users can subscribe to a service that will allow the school to send out quick text messages reminding about all sorts of things from when school is out to when grades are distributed. It will also allow us to send out emergency information if it is ever needed. We will not fill your phone with spam and only plan to send a couple text messages a month. Be aware - standard text message charges apply so if your plan charges you to receive a text message, you will be responsible for that cost.
