S.E.O.P. Process
7th Grade TLC Small Group
Presentation:
The 7th grade counselor goes into
each TLC Career Development class. The counselor discusses with the
students career interests and opportunities. The counselor helps students
identify personal strengths, interests and values and the integral role these
characteristics have in making good career choices.
Students then complete an interest
inventory to help them identify careers that correspond to their strengths,
interests and values.
The SEOP process is discussed and
the students list their three career choices on their SEOP folder and sign it.
Finally, they take this information
and research their three career choices on the Choices Jr. Program. The
students are then encouraged to take this information home and discuss it with
their parents.
7th Grade Individual
Registration/SEOP Conference:
The 7th grade counselor meets with
the 6th grade elementary teachers from each of the Junior High feeder
schools. The teachers are asked to make recommendations for class
placement based on student performance and SAT scores. The resource
department head also coordinates placement with feeder 6th grade resource
teachers.
Appointments are then made for an
evening registration/SEOP meeting with all incoming 7th grade students and their
parents. The counselors review the elementary teacher recommendations and
finalize class selections. We introduce them to the SEOP process and
provide them with information for a successful transition into Jr. High.
They are given a Granite District Jr. High manual and booklet entitled How to
Get Good Grades.
8th Grade Small Group
Registration/SEOP:
The small group SEOP conference
process begins with a presentation by the Kearns High school counselors in an
8th grade assembly. The counselors discuss graduation requirements and the
importance of specific basic classes and the consequences of failing these
classes, such as community education and not being able to take drivers
education. They focus on the benefits of having a 4-year academic plan
with career goals and that 9th grade is a critical year to achieve
success. The counselors also discuss the various opportunities students
have to be involved in high school, activities, and programs.
This assembly is followed by the 8th
grade counselors meeting with all 8th graders and their parents in small groups
to register the students for 9th grade. Ninth grade requirements are
discussed along with elective options and the criteria for signing up for these
classes. The counselor again emphasizes the importance of 9th grade
credits and the consequences of failing classes, specifically English and
Geography.
Finally, the students are required
to discuss their choices with their parents and get their registration card
signed.
8th Grade Individual SEOP
Conference:
We determine if parents are
available during the day or evening for SEOP conferences. Appointments are
made for each student and an appointment letter is sent to each parent.
During the 30 minute SEOP conference
we review recent report card grades and SAT test results. We also discuss
registration for 9th grade, future goals and career choices. We also
evaluate the likelihood of accomplishment based on current performance. We
encourage students to take courses that match their career goal and discuss the
expectations and requirements to achieve that career goal.
Students are given a list of all
courses offered in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at the high school. The
list shows required classes and every course offered for each grade. They
are also given a high school manual that provides information regarding every
course and high school graduation requirements.
Concurrent enrollment between Kearns
High School and SLCC is discussed and a list of course offerings is given to
each student. With this information students and parents are encouraged to
plan the classes the student can take for the three years beyond 9th grade.
We give to the students and discuss
with them information regarding attending Utah's colleges and
universities. We also discuss vocational trade areas, applied technology
centers and other post high school options.
9th Grade Small Group SEOP
Conferences:
We meet with the 9th grade students
in September and discuss graduation requirements and the importance of good
scholarship and citizenship during their Freshman (9th grade) year. We
discuss the impact failing grades will have on graduation, ability to take
drivers education, and the necessity of taking night school classes or summer
school to be on-line for graduation. The 9th grade counselor encourages
students to meet with the Jefferson employment specialist to explore
careers. Students are made aware of career workshops available for them to
attend.
During the month of March, the 9th
grade students attend an orientation assembly at Kearns High School. The
presentation describes curriculum offerings, as well as various programs and
activities in which students can participate.
The following day, the high school
counselors meet with the students in their 9th grade English classes and discuss
10th grade course offerings and requirements. Students are also provided
with a high school registration booklet, which covers course offerings grades
10-12. This allows students and parents to develop a 3-year student
education and occupation plan. The high school counselors follow-up the
next day by meeting individually with each 9th grade student to finalize the
registration process. A high school resource department representative is
also available to meet with students and insure proper resource placement.
9th Grade Individual SEOP
Conference:
We schedule evening individualized
SEOP conferences during the month of May. We begin by reviewing the video
"The Path to Success". Students and parents are then given an
individual Progress Toward Graduation summary. This is reviewed and
explained in light of the requirements needed for graduation. We also
provide and discuss the "Preparing for Life After High School"
booklet.
