Cheerleading Rules and Regulations
The purpose of the cheerleading organization is to develop leadership, promote unity within the school, and to generate school spirit and enthusiasm.
I. Representatives
- 1. Cheerleaders shall promote and uphold school spirit.
- 2. They shall develop a sense of good sportsmanship among the students.
- 3. They shall promote unification of the crowd's involvement during athletic events.
- 4. They shall strive to build better relationships between schools.
- 5. They shall strive to uphold the highest personal, as well as cheerleading standards whether in uniform or not.
II. Eligibility
- 1. Cheerleaders must maintain the minimum grade point average (3.0 GPA) and citizenship (3.0 CPA) for each term without an I or F.
- 2. If requirements are not met in a term, the cheerleader will be put on probation until the grade is made up or the mid-term grade posting, whichever is shorter.
- 3. Probation means no participation in any events or dress in uniform, but the cheerleader is still required to attend all practices and games to support the squad.
- 4. You are only allowed to be on probation once. If for any reason you are unable to meet eligibility requirements you will be cut from the KJH cheerleading squad.
III. Expectation
Practice Rules
- 1. For practice you must wear practice clothes. Proper attire includes shorts, sweats, t-shirts, and cheer shoes. Hair must be restrained from face and shoulders. Jeans, sandals, and revealing clothing are not allowed for practice.
- 2. Everyone must attend all practices and be on time. If you cannot make it you must tell the coach by phone call or in person.
- 3. Jewelry and cell phones are prohibited during practices, games, and while in uniform.
- 4. You must be dressed and ready to practice at the designated practice times. If practice is missed the week of a performance you will not be able perform.
Performance Rules
- 1. KJH Cheerleaders cheer at all home games for Soccer, Volleyball, Wrestling, and Basketball.
- 2. You must wear your entire uniform to school on game day and to the game. This includes your cheer shoes and the removal of jewelry.
- 3. KJH Cheerleaders start every school assembly with the flag ceremony and school song.
IV. Financial Responsibilities
- 1. Uniforms and matching camp wear will not exceed the amount of $300. Any damaged part of the uniform will be replaced at your own expense. Uniforms for females consist of: skirt, top, briefs, sneakers, and warm-ups. Uniforms for males consist of: shorts, top, sneakers, and warm-ups.
- 2. Summer camp for KJH will not exceed $180 and attendance is required.
- 3. Everything must be paid for before going to camp or receiving any part of the uniforms.
- 4. If you are removed from the squad for any reason, you are still responsible for any fees charged or deposits required for things that have already been ordered or applied for.
- 5. A deposit of $150 is required by May 4th and a second deposit of $150 by June 4th.
V. Tryouts
- 1. In order to try out for cheerleader you must have a 3.0 GPA with no incompletes and 3.0 Citizenship Average 3rd term.
- 2. Tryouts will consist of performing designated skills in front of judges.
- 3. Criterion for judging includes executing sharp/crisp movements, good vocal projection, enthusiasm, and confidence while performing a dance, performance cheer, and the KJH school song.
- 4. The format of the tryouts will be decided by the coach and will be held in a fair manner conducive to allowing each candidate to show his/her best abilities and potential. When the time comes to select the cheerleading squad, the judges' decisions are final.
VI. Captain and Co-Captain
- 1. The KJH Cheer squad will have a captain and a co-captain. The person with the highest score from the judges will be appointed captain and the co-captain will be a majority vote of the squad.
- 2. Assist in setting cheers and chants to be used at competitions and events. The squad should make suggestions, but the decision shall be by the captain, co-captain, and coach.
- 3. Act as peacemakers in case of disagreements.
- 4. Be responsible for welcoming visiting squads and setting a good example of friendliness to other cheerleaders.
- 5. Keep the crowd cheering and your cheerleaders in proper formation during games and competitions.
- 6. Show no favoritism within the squad.
- 7. In the event the captain or co-captain is not able to perform his/her duties, the coach will appoint a replacement.
VII. Conduct
- 1. Squad members are required to maintain and uphold the values of Kearns Junior High through their own conduct and squad spirit.
- 2. Members are required to be respectful and attentive to all coaches at all times. They are to be courteous, polite, and try to have a smile for every student.
- 3. All cheers and chants shall be of a positive and sportsmanlike manner.
- 4. Members will make every attempt to ignore or dissuade negative responses at events and not become involved in such action themselves.
VIII. School Standards
Cheerleaders must comply with all school rules as stated in the school policy handbook and the school folder. Violation will result in immediate two-week probation and can result in dismissal from office by the Standards Committee. These include but are not limited to:
- 1. Students must not use or have in their possession tobacco, alcohol, or drugs of any kind without doctor's order or prescription.
- 2. No threats of violence, fighting, or vandalism at or during school, and no violation of school drug and alcohol policies or safe-school policy will be permitted.
- 3. Involvement in criminal activity in the community or at school.
- 4. Compliance with school dress standards while in school and at all school functions is mandatory.
- 5. No sluffing or excessive tardiness will be permitted. One sluff will result in probation. More than one sluff can result in dismissal.
- 6. Students must use acceptable language and model appropriate behavior and good manners in school and at all school functions.
- 7. Receive no suspensions from school.
Cheerleaders may be suspended or dismissed from competitions, events, and from the squad by the coach, Principal, or KJH Standards Committee.
