    Principal's Message

We are looking forward to an exciting and productive year at Matheson Junior High School. Our students have developed a great motto for this year that will set the stage for a year of academic excellence , extradordinary citizenship and school pride. Our motto for the 2011-12 school year will be, "Connect to the Power of Knowledge." We hope that students will begin school with a sense of enthusiasm for learning. Our academic prgrams will continue to emphasize academic excellence, achievement, and proficiency. We will continue our school-wide literacy initative this year with our Paws to Read and Matheson Vocabulary Power programs. We encourage our seventh grade students to complete 70 minutes of homework each night, eighth grade students to complete 80 minutes of homework each night, and ninth graders to complete 90 minutes of homework each night. Please remember that your student will need a calm and structured place for homework completion and your support in emphasizing the importance of academic proficiency. Your support is essential to the overall school program at Matheson Juniour High School.

We will continue to be a Community of Caring school embracing the calues of Family, Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Caring. We are proud to be a past recipient of the Utah State School of Character award. We will continue to focus our efforets on character development. We invite you to join us in our positive culture of caring for one another, being kind to each other, and always celebrating the positive accomplishments of our students. We encourage family involvement throught Community Council and PTSA. We hope you will become involved with PTSA through membership, collecting Box Tops for school projects, and attending school activities.

This year will be a great year at Matheson Junior High School. We celebrate an extraordinary team of faculty members, outstanding support staff, and a wonderful community of patrons. Thanks for all you do for Matheson!

    Tips for Parents

    • Help set up a consistent organized place for homework to be done.
    • Help your child establish a consistent schedule for completing homework.
    • Encourage, motivate, and promt your child, but do not sit with her/him and do the homework with them. The purpose of the homeowrk is for your child to practice and use what she/he  has learned. if your child is consistently unable to do the homeowrk by themselves, please contact the teacher.
    • If your child is practicing a skill, ask them to  tell you which steps are easy, which are difficult, or how they are going to improve. if your child is doing  a project ask them about the knoledge they are practacing or using, please call the teacher
    • When bedtime comes, please stop your child, even if she/he is not done.

    How Much Time for Homework

    • Research varies on this topic. Marzano, et.al. (2001) suggest the homework should equal approximately 10 times a student grade level in minutes.
    • 7th Grade - 70 minutes
    • 8th Grader - 80 minutes
    • 9th Grader - 90 minutes
