Principal's Message
It’s a great year to be a Tiger!
We are celebrating an outstanding beginning to the 2009-10 school year at Matheson Junior High School. We are welcoming many new students, new faculty members, and new families to the school and we are excited about the work we are doing this year.
Our motto for this year is “Matheson Junior High School: Where Academic Excellence Comes First.” The students and teachers have embraced the goals of the school and students are working diligently to succeed in their academic programs. We will again ask our seventh graders to study for 70 minutes at home on Monday through Thursday nights. If they have additional work to do they should continue through the weekends. The eighth graders will be required to study at home for 80 minutes, and the ninth graders will be required to study at home for 90 minutes. We appreciate family support in helping our students develop positive and productive study skills. We are continuing our Paws to Read program which emphasizes independent reading. Our students read more than 8,000 books last year. We have set a goal for students to read at least 10,000 books by the end of this school year. With our increased enrollment, we expect our students to go beyond the goal. We will also continue with Matheson Vocabulary Power: Who’s an MVP? This program addresses vocabulary acquisition throughout the year. You can assist your student by asking about vocabulary words in all areas of the curriculum. Mathematics will also be an intensive focus this year. We ask that you encourage your students to study and practice their skills on a consistent basis.
We would also appreciate your support in safe routes to school. Please remember to obey all signs and routes in the parking lot area of our school. We ask that you drop-off your students in the drive-through without parking there. This causes other drivers to drop-off in the parking area and students then cross traffic to make their way to the sidewalk. We are concerned, as you are, for their safety. Also, if you have a student who crosses 3500 South, please be sure to discuss the crosswalk and safety practices in crossing the busy street. We appreciate your help in discussing all safety rules with your students.
We continue to be a Community of Caring school where Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Family are taught. Matheson Junior High is a great school because our students, teachers, staff, and families care about each other and strive for academic excellence. Thank you all for your support!
Please look over the articles in our newsletter and also check our web page to stay informed about the events and goals of the school. We hope that you will join the PTA this year to support our school. We will host a competition between grades and classes to improve our membership. The PTA supports all levels of our academic programs and our Matheson Family. We were chosen by the State of Utah PTA as a recipient of the PTA award this year. Your students had the privilege of listening to Miss Utah discuss the rewards of living a safe, drug and alcohol free life. She presented the idea that anything is possible for them in the future if they make good choices and set goals for themselves. It was an inspirational day at Matheson and we appreciated being chosen for this great honor. The membership is just $5.00. We hope you will be able to join and maybe add an additional membership for your child if you are able. Again, we appreciate your support, we couldn’t do these great things for the students without all of you.
I am honored to be the principal of Matheson Junior High School. This is a great community and I enjoy the students here each and every day! Thank you for your continued support. Have a great year!
Ms. Woolf
Principal
