Olympus Junior High School Activities Sports Anyone can tryout for Oly Jr. sports. Listen to morning announcements for where and when the tryouts begin. Activities/Teams/Clubs Cybercorps – Good at computers? Like to help people figure out how to better use their computer? Patient? Be part of a computer trouble shooting team. See Ms. Moody in the library. Mesa Club – Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement club. Activiteis are held after school 2-3 times a month on Wednesdays for 40 minutes and include games, building projects, and peer tutoring. Two field trips are also available, along with a Lagoon Day in May. In April, all schools send teams to compete in a variety of activites. A GPA of 2.0 in science, math, and English classes and 70% attendance at meeting is required for club membership. See Mr. Gregory in room 310. Stage Crew – Open to all students. Students are trained, assigned, and perform tasks related to sound, light, and stage equipment for concerts, assemblies, and plays. Crew meets once to three times a week. See Mr. Peters in room 305. Chess Team – This team is for all interested students. Meetings are on Thursdays. They will be competing in a state tournament March 18-19. See Mr. Clark in room 309. Intermural Sports – Open to all students. Sports held periodically during the school year, before or after school. See Coach Brough in the gym. Math Olympiad – This team meets to solve problems and prepare for monthly national competitions. See Mr. Gregory in room 310. Academic Games – The Academic Team competes in January and February, with practices starting in October. Practices are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each week the team competes against other junior high schools answering questions in math, US history, geography, science, and English. See Ms. Sanders in room 307. Musical – Tryouts are open to all students. Everyone who tries out is given a part somewhere in the production. Practices run every Monday through Thursday, with some Fridays and Saturdays. The musical is presented in the spring. See Mr. Walstad in room 111. Model United Nation – This team is for all 9th grade students interested in international affairs. Competitions are in the winter and spring. See Ms. Miller in room 306. French Language Fairs – French students have an opportunity to participate in the BYU Language Fair in April. Teams answer questions about French geography, history, food, famous people, and other cultural information. Other students compete in recitation of a poem or dramatic reading, and a French spelling bee. See Ms. Haymond in room 321. Spring Art Show – The Spring Art Show is usually held during April. It is open to all students. The “Best of Show” goes on to the District. The principal chooses the “Principal Purchase Award” to become a permanent collection of Olympus Junior High School. See Ms. Moffat in room 113. The computer lab is open every morning at 6:45 am and after school until 3:15 pm Monday through Thursday. The lab is room 217 and Ms. Nate is there. |
