7th Grade Individual Registration/SEOP Conference

The sixth grade teachers from Valley’s feeder elementary schools come to a meeting with the teachers and counselors each January. The teachers give a screening test in math and reading to their students. They also give recommendations to Valley on class placement. The counselor meets with each incoming 7th grade student and their parent/s during the spring of their sixth grade year. They discuss the transition to 7th grade, the student’s interests and career plans and register them for 7th grade.

7th Grade TLC Small Group Presentations

Parents are invited to attend TLC class with their student during the time the counselor goes into their class help students identify their interests, values and abilities. Career Futures is used to help identify their interests and students print out information on three possible career choices to take home and discuss with their parents.

8th Grade Individual SEOP Conference

Appointment letters are sent to each family. If requested in advance changes in times may be made. During the 20 minute conference in the spring of the 7th grade, grades, standardized test results, educational goals and possible career choices are discussed. The counselor encourages the student to take courses consistent with their educational an vocational goals.

8th Grade Small Group SEOP Conferences

The 8th grade counselor goes into the English classes this year to present a lesson on the American Careers Planner magazine. Students will take an interest inventory, determine their personality types, learn about Utah careers in demand and educational opportunities in Utah. Parents will be notified in advance so they can attend with their student.

9th Grade Individual Conferences

In the spring of the 8th grade each student meets with their counselor and parents to plan their freshman year and develop a 4 year plan for high school. Grades, test results and student activities are discussed. Post high school training and/or jobs are also discussed.

9th Grade Small Group Conference

High school counselors come in the spring of the 9th grade to all the geography classes to explain high school registration. The following week parents are invited to attend the geography class with the student and talk to the counselor about the registration and student achievement levels.
