If you arrive at school in the morning after the
tardy bell rings, but prior to 8:15 a.m., report to your first period class.
An excused tardy will be recorded if you have a signed and dated note from your
parent. If you arrive at school after 8:15 a.m., you must report to the attendance
office and check in with the attendance secretary. An excused check-in will
require a signed and dated note from a parent (guardian), otherwise a detention
will be assigned. If you bring a note the following day the assigned detention
will be canceled. By the way, sleeping in late is not an excusable tardy! Valley
Jr. High has ZERO tolerance for tardiness. The passing time between classes
is sufficient for students to arrive on-time. Frequent hall sweeps may
result in tardy students being placed In School Suspension.

Because of the school's commitment to quality education, we are concerned when a child misses school for any reason. The Granite School District requires that all children achieve mastery in the basic skills identified for reading, lanuage arts and mathematics. Absence from school interferes with the child's opportunity to master these skills.
According to the Utah Compulsory Attendance Laws (53 A-11-101) every school age child must be in school. The parents are responsible for their children's regular school attendance. It is a misdemeanor if you fail to have your child in regular attendance.
Occasionally a student must be absent from school for reasons which are acceptable to the school as well as the court. please send a note to school every time your child is absent, explaining the reason. The school and the court usually require a statement from a doctor regarding extended absences for illness. Appointments with doctors should be arranged after school hours, the student is excused only for the time it takes for the appointment and traveling time.
Your cooperation is needed tp help us give your student a quality education.
Please have your parent/guardian notify the attendance office (964-7638) if
you are ill of have an unavoidable emergency and will not be attending school
that day. the automated computer system will call to notify you of student
absences.

The natural consequence for truancy is the inability
of the student to make up any missed work during that absence and the reduction
in citizenship grades. In addition, students with truancy problems will be referred
to the administration. The administration may choose to assign detentions for
missed classes, arrange parent conferences, place student on attendance contract,
refer to truancy court, or place in an alternative educational setting.

You may turn in make-up work for any excused absence.
It is the student's responsibility to obtain all make-up work from the teachers
immediately upon return to school. Students will have two school days for each
day missed to make up work. Special arrangements can be worked out between teacher
and student.
If a student is absent for 3 or more consecutive
days, a parent may request the attendance office to ask teachers for homework
assignments. For absences of less than 3 days, it is suggested that students
keep the phone number of a "study buddy" in each class to call for an update
on homework.

Students are responsible with their parents to
pay for the repair on any vandalism they commit, as well as to pay the current
replacement cost for school books, supplies and equipment which they loose or
damage. All basic texts are lent to students for their use during the school
year. Textbooks are expensive and must be taken care of. Write your name in
each book in case it is misplaced. When books are returned in proper condition
at the end of the year, a $10 refund is issued from the book deposit paid at
registration.

To participate in (student government elections,
cheerleader elections, and inter-scholastic sports) students must meet certain
eligibility standards in academic grades that are set by our school constitution
and the Utah High School Activities Association. Students must maintain a 3.0

school. The district school lunch program will begin the first day of school.
The price of junior high lunches will be $1.30 per day or $6.50 per 5 day week.
Valley is on the computerized lunch program. We strongly recommend that
all lunch money be paid in the form of a check or money order.
Check, money order or cash must be placed in an envelope with the students full
name and "pin number" on it. Lunch money envelopes must be placed in the drop
box located in the front office. IMPORTANT: NO CHANGE CAN BE MADE ON ANY
LUNCH MONEY.
Application forms for free and reduced price meals will be available in the main office. Families who qualify should return the form to the office. Forms must be approved and on file in the school office.
Students may be in the following areas during

the tardy bell rings. Students found in areas other than those designated will
be subject to disciplinary action.
Valley Ligers show respect by courtesy, and manners
in the lunch area. It is not acceptable to "butt" in lines, throw food, or not
pick up after yourself.

There is a public telephone in the main hall in
the area across from the front office. Students who might need to call home
should have .50 cents with them to use the phone. The school phone is for business
use only. Emergency Messages will be taken for students only from parents or
guardians.

Students who find lost articles are asked to take
them to the Lost & Found in the front office. Lost articles which are not
claimed within a reasonable time will be given to a charitable organization.
Students who cannot find their missing valuable
in the Lost & Found or feel their valuable has been stolen may contact the
assistant principal for some help; however the school is not responsible
for lost, stolen or damaged property.
Students are cautioned not to bring large amounts
of money, cameras or other valuables to school. Take care to keep track of glasses
and watches at all times. Students, not the school, are responsible
for their personal property. If it is necessary to bring more money
than needed for lunch, leave it at the office for safe keeping. Do not leave
anything of value in lockers!

Items which may be distracting, and/or a detriment
to the education process or which may be a hazard to others are not to be brought
to school. Such items as water pistols, radios, headphones, CD players, pagers,
cellular phones, laser pointers, etc. will be picked up by school officials and
returned only at parental request. Possession of matches, pocket knives, lighters,
firecrackers, weapons or facsimiles, etc. violate safe school and fire code
policies and will be processed accordingly.
Pagers and cellular phones can be disruptive to
the learning environment. Do not bring them to school. If parents need to contact
their student, they may call the attendance office at 964-7638.

Students are not permitted in the halls during
class periods unless they are accompanied by a teacher or have an official hall
pass(student planner) from an authorized staff person. Only one student
is allowed to a hall pass. Hall passes are issued on a very limited
basis.

No student will be allowed to use flammable materials,
matches, lighters, candles, or any type of open flame in the school building
or grounds except for classroom experiments under the direct supervision of
the teacher. Noncompliance will result in confiscation of object and suspension
from school and referral to the Fire Marshall for further disciplinary action.
Emergency drills are held at regular intervals to ensure proper evacuation of
the building in case of emergencies. Students will be instructed as to procedures
and will be expected to comply in a prompt and orderly manner. Students should
not sit or slide on railings. Any accident or injury occurring at school must
be reported immediately to the office.
| Back to Top of page |
If it is necessary for a student to take any form
of medication at school, the parent must complete a school medication permission
form and have it signed by the doctor. It will then be dispensed according to
the doctor's instructions.

Lockers are the property of the school and loaned to students for their convenience. Each 9th grader is assigned a locker. 7th and 8th graders are assigned 2 students to a locker. Students are not to use any other locker and are not to let any student not assigned by the school to use their locker. It is the students' responsibility to maintain the security of the locker and the combination should not be given to any other student.
Students wishing to make a change in a locker combination do so by paying $1 per occupant to the counseling office. Students who wish to change into another locker must get permission from the assistant principal or a counselor.
Students are responsible for the care and condition
(inside and outside) of the locker assigned to them. Lockers are to be kept
neat and clean. Items of an objectionable nature or that cannot be easily removed
are not to be displayed inside the locker.
The administration has the legal right
to inspect lockers.

Granite School District secondary school personnel
subscribe to the values of the Community of Caring, a program which is part
of the curriculum in all of our junior and senior high schools. Our expectations
for citizenship reflect the philosophy that embraces the values of that program,
which are:
Families: We begin to learn our values in our families.
Caring: Caring is at the heart of a decent life. It leads us to help others and to respect ourselves.
Responsibility: People who care must be willing to take responsibility, which means they are accountable for their actions.
Respect: Those who take responsibility for their actions will be respected by others.
Trust: When people car for and
respect each other, trust takes root and grows.
I. General Information
and Requirements for Citizenship in
Granite School District
A. Satisfactory citizenship is a graduation
requirement in Granite School District. This includes behavior, attendance,
punctuality, and adherence to the rules and policies of the school. Students
will be required to earn a 2.000 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on a
4.000 point scale in grades 9-12. In addition to academic grades the following
citizenship grades will be awarded.
4-Honor: 3-Good: 2-Satisfactory: 1-Poor: 0-Failure
B. Ninth grade students who earn less than a
2.000 cumulative GPA during the 9th grade year may not be permitted to participate
in promotion or the year-end activities.
C. Transfer students will be required to maintain
a 2.000 GPA to meet graduation requirements from the time they enroll in Granite
School District.
D. High school students who do not achieve the
required 2.000 GPA may not graduate. The final decision will be made by each
high school¹s graduation committee.
II. Citizenship Determination
A. Classroom behavior should reflect
the values of a caring community. Behavior should also be appropriate and
consistent with each teacher¹s expectations. The expectations will be
described in the disclosure statements received form each teacher. Teachers
will be encouraged to provide options for students to improve citizenship
during the term being graded.
B. Following are the standards
for behavior, attendance, truancy, and tardiness.
1. Behavior: An uncorrected series of
negative behaviors or one serious incident could result in a "0" in citizenship.
2. Granite School District Attendance Policy:
All children of legal school age residing within the boundaries of the Granite
School District shall be required to be in regular school attendance in accord
with the compulsory attendance laws of the State of UT. ( Section 53A-11-101through
Section 53A-11-105, Utah Code, Annotated 1965.)
a. Students must be in regular attendance to
understand and successfully complete a course of study, therefore, parents
and students should accept responsibility and accountability for the student¹s
attendance.
b. Parents or guardians must provide school
personnel a written excuse for each absence.
c. Parents are encouraged to seek prior approval
for their student's extended absences. If approved by the administration,
those absences will not negatively reflect on the citizenship grade. The administration
may require documentation for frequent or extended absences.
3. Truancy: A truancy is defined as an
unexcused absence. On the 1st truancy during any term the student will receive
a grade no higher than a"1", and on the 2nd truancy a "0".
4. Tardiness: On the 4th tardy from any
1 class the student will not receive a grade higher than "1". Teachers may
provide the option of allowing tardies to be made up during the term being
graded.
III. Appeals Procedure
If a student disputes a citizenship grade, it
must be resolved with the issuing teacher before the end of the term following
the one in which the grade was received.
IV. Due Process
A. Citizenship Requirements for Graduation will
be provided to each student/parent by the beginning of each school year.
B. Each report card will reflect the citizenship
grades for the term and the cumulative CPA which will reflect progress toward
graduation. Sixteen report cards are issued to students who attend school
in grades 9-12.
C. Students who fail to achieve a 2.000 cumulative
CPA at the end of each year will be notified that graduation is in jeopardy.
Students and parents will be invited to meet with the school administration
to determine a positive course of action before the student is allowed to
register for the following year.
D. Students who fail to meet the citizenship
requirement for high school graduation may enroll in the Granite School District
Adult Education program and earn a Granite School District diploma.
V. Recognition of Outstanding Citizenship
Each school will develop ways to recognize outstanding student citizenship. These may include:
