(ASD )
ASD is held one day per week from 3:00-3:45 PM in room 213. Students are given ASD's for tardies; unexcused absences; dress code violations, classroom disruptions, and other infractions of school rules or policies.
Parents will be notified (email, phone, ASD copy sent home with student) if their son/daughter has been assigned an ASD.
Students who fail to make up an ASD in the allotted time will be assigned a second detention; those not completing an ASD the second time will be referred to the administration and placed in ISS (In-School Suspension).
Assemblies are an important part of the curriculum. Students should quickly and quietly go to the auditorium and sit in their assigned seats. Students should exhibit respectful behavior and should refrain from whistling, booing, yelling and talking.
Attendance
Granite District's attendance policy states that “all children of legal age shall be required to be in regular school attendance in accordance with the compulsory attendance laws of the state of Utah”
(Section 53A-11-105, Utah Code, Annotated, 1965).
Students must be in regular attendance to understand and successfully complete a course of study; therefore, parents and students should accept responsibility for the student's attendance.
Parents/guardians must provide school personnel with a written excuse for all absences. Students should bring the excuse note to Mrs. Leavitt, attendance secretary, the morning they return to school. (Students' name and Student ID number should be written on the excuse.)
Parents are asked to notify the school for any extended absences (vacations, etc.)
Seven or more days (or equivalent periods) of excused absences within a school year are considered excessive; students may required to submit a physician's note to excuse additional absences.
After five or more days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year, the parents/guardians will be mailed the first Truancy Letter requesting assistance with their child's attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy. (Students must be in attendance 4/7 of a day to receive credit for one full day.)
After 10 days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the parents/guardians a Habitual Truancy Notice/Pre-Court Hearing letter that requires appearance at a pre-court hearing.
After 15 or more days ( or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year, parents/student will be mailed a Habitual Truancy Notice. Students in grades 7-12 will be referred to the Third District Juvenile Court.
Parents/Guardians shall have five (5) calendar days from the date of the last absence to excuse their son or daughter's absence from school.
Backpacks

Students may bring backpacks to and from school but because of space limitations, backpacks are not permitted in classrooms. It is suggested that students carry totes or messenger bags to class rather than backpacks.
Backpacks are subject to inspection by the administration; illegal or unsafe substances should not be carried in backpacks. The school is not responsible for lost backpacks and/or contents.

Bicycles, Roller blades, Skateboards, and Scooters
Bicycles should be locked in the bicycle rack during school hours. Skateboards, roller blades, and scooters must be carried into the school and put in students' locker.
Students may not ride these items on school property. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary consequences and loss of property.
Checking Out of School Closed Campus
Parents wishing to take their son or daughter to lunch should write a note requesting such. The student should bring the request to the Attendance Office before the

Citizenship Policy
Students are required to maintain a 2.00 CPA to meet graduation requirements (9 th – 12 th grade.)
Those students not maintaining a 2.00 CPA in ninth grade will be deficient in citizenship credit when entering high school.
In addition to academic grades, the following citizenship grades will be awarded:
4 Honor
3 Good
2 Satisfactory
1 Poor
0 Failure
Behavior : An uncorrected series of negative behaviors or one serious incident could result in a “0” grade in citizenship.
Truancy: Truancy is defined as an
unexcused absence. On the first truancy
during any one term, the student shall receive a citizenship grade no higher than a “1” and on the second, a citizenship grade of “0.”

Dress Code
The school dress policy applies to all students. Students are expected to dress and groom themselves so as not to:
* Lead school officials reasonably to believe that such dress or grooming will disrupt, interfere with, disturb, or detract from school activitie s;
* Create a hazard to the student's own health or safety or to the health or safety of others ;
* Gang-related or threatening to the school,
*Vulgar or offensive ;
*Promotes the use of drug s;
* Contains symbols and words that promote values that are patently contrary to the school's educational mission, including, but not limited to:

NO:
Body piercing other than earlobes (e.g. tongue studs
or nose rings);
Clothing that is worn in any way that reflects gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a distraction ;
Tank tops, halters, spaghetti strips, bare midriffs, and other abbreviated clothin g;
Shirts and tops must cover the waist, shoulders and back. (Sleeveless tops are permitted but must measure 2- 2 ½” across the shoulder and cover the underwear);
Shorts or skirts worn other than at the waistline;
Sagging pants that r eveal the underwear or is more than one size larger than the student's measurements;
Shorts, skirts, and dresses that are shorter than fingertip level when arms are held straight to the sides or no shorter than 5” above the top of the kneeca p;
Caps, hats, or bandanas;
Clothing with profanity, suggestive or sexual remarks or innuendos, gang affiliation, promotes the use of drugs;
Jeans that expose the midriff or lower back;
Pajamas or slippers unless on a day designated as such (i.e. “Pajama Day”)
Jeans with holes that expose underwea r;
Spiked jewelry; chains on wallets that exceed 6” in length
Sunglasses worn inside the school unless prescribed by a physician;
Students who wear inappropriate clothing will be referred to the administration. The student shall be required to contact parents to bring appropriate clothing and shall be placed in In- School- Suspension (ISS) until the parent arrives. Students who repeatedly violate the dress code will be suspended.
Administrators will have complete and final judgment on all matters concerning interpretation of the student dress code. Matters concerning appearance and dress not specifically covered in the dress code policy shall be within the discretion of the administration.
On the first offense, the student will be assigned an ASD (After School Detention); on the second, referral to ISS (In-School Suspension); on the third, suspension.
Drills/Fire/Safety
Fire, earthquake, and “lock-down” drills are held throughout the year. Students will be instructed and will practice proper evacuation to be utilized in the event of an emergency. Any student accident or injury should be immediately reported to the main office. Flammable materials, matches, candles, lighters, etc. are not allowed in school or on school grounds.

Cell phones may only be used before 7:45 AM and after 2:45 PM Monday – Thursday and before 7:45 AM and after 12:30 PM on Fridays.
Cell phones may not be used during school hours (including lunch).
Consequences:
On the first violation, the item will be returned to the student at the end of the day and the student shall sign an “Electronic Devices” contract. One ASD will be given.
In the event of an emergency, parents should contact the counseling center and NOT contact the student by cellphone.
A telephone is available in the counseling center for student use. Emergency messages will be taken only from a custodial parent or legal guardian.
Eligibility Standards
A. SBO's, Cheerleaders, and Mascot
Students running for Student Body Officer (SBO), Cheerleader, or Mascot must meet the eligibility requirements listed below:
A GPA of 3.0 for each of the three terms prior to the term of election with no “F” grades and no more than 1 “D” grade;
A CPA of 3.0 for each of the three terms prior to the term of election with no “0” grades and no more than two “1's during the three terms;
Academic and citizenship report card grade changes will not be accepted for determining eligibility unless changes are made to correct a teacher error.
If elected to office, students must maintain these standards during the fourth term of the election year and in each term of office thereafter.

B. Team Eligibility Standards
Students trying out for athletic teams must meet eligibility standards the term prior t o the term in which the student is trying out and during each term of competition.

Students who are absent because of illness and need homework should adhere to the following:
Contact a friend. Students should have the phone number of a friend in each class to contact for homework.
Parents may contact the attendance office (646.5247) and arrange to pick up homework.
For example :
If a student is absent on a Monday;
returns to school on Tuesday, and obtains assignment from the teacher,
The:
Student has until Wednesday to complete assignment(s)
Student has the same amount of time to complete the assignment(s) as the student who was not absent.
Student who has been made aware of an assignment's due date before becoming ill is responsible for turning in the assignment on the first day he/she returns to school.
Honor Roll
Students are eligible for the Honor Roll according to their grade point average each term; namely:
Hiigh Honor Roll: 3.85 – 4.00
Honor Roll: 3.50 – 3.84
Students who earn Honor or High Honor Roll each term will have their names posted and will receive a certificate of achievement.
Students may use school Internet access, including e-mail, only for teacher-directed activities. All students must complete and return Granite District's “Student Internet Use Agreement” before using any computer. Students who violate this agreement will have their internet privileges terminated.

The media center is open from 7:30 AM - 3:15 PM each day.
Students may check three books out for two weeks.
A $.05 fine per day will be charged for each late book.

Lagoon and Year-End Activities
Ninth grade students must complete all assigned ASD's and be in good standing in order to attend
Lagoon and promotion activities.
Eligibility for Lagoon will be based on attitude, behavior, and completion of all ASD's. Students who sluff during the month of May will be ineligible to attend Lagoon.

The administration reserves the right to withhold this privilege from any ninth grade student.

Lockers are the property of Granite School District and are loaned to students for their convenience. Students should maintain the security of their lockers by not giving out the combination. The administration may search lockers at any time with or without reasonable cause. It is recommended that students not share lockers.
P.E. lockers are available for students enrolled in the class. Each student is assigned a locker with a combination lock in which to store property.
The Lost and Found is located in the Wasatch main office. Students should label or engrave items brought to school. At the end of each term, unclaimed items are given to a charitable organization.
Lunch
Lunch will be served on the first day of school and will cost $1.60. Students may deposit money for lunch in the Wasatch main office each day before school begins. Please send only the amount you wish to have deposited in your child's lunch account as no change will be given.
Student will be issued a PIN number that they should remember and keep confidential. They will be reminded when their lunch account is low. Students should maintain sufficient funds to purchase lunch as the school is prohibited from lending money or providing a free lunch. The school does not give change.
Lunch options include:
Energy zone – school lunch Students must pay cash for pizza or a la carte items.
End of year lunch balances:
Students in seventh and eighth may carry lunch balances forward to the next school year. All students must have a zero (“0”) balance by the end of the school year.
Medication
Secondary students may retain and self-administer medications subject to the following:
Medication, prescription or non-prescription, shall be taken only as prescribed.
Medication, prescription or non-prescription, shall not be sold, shared, or otherwise given to others.
Granite Health Services may withdraw authorization for administration of medication at any time with parental notice.
Violations of this policy may be regarded as substance abuse and could result in disciplinary action pursuant to the district's policies and procedures regarding substance abuse.
It is recommended that students only bring a one-day dose to school.
Memory Book Policy
Memory books may be purchased at a cost of $16.00 and are distributed at the end of the year.
Students who have been suspended or who have checked out of school early must pick up their yearbooks the week following the last day of school.
Money and Valuables
Granite District policy mandates that cash is not to be kept in the school; therefore, the school is unable to make change for students. When writing a check for school fees, please make out the check to “Wasatch Junior High” for only the amount of purchase.
It is recommended that students not bring large amounts of cash or valuables to school.
Midterm reports are available at Parent/Teacher Conferences during the first and third terms.
Second and fourth term midterms are sent home with students.
Report cards (for 1, 2, & 3rd terms) are printed and sent home with students; fourth term report cards are mailed to parents.
Midterm and end of term grades are also available on the internet.

Safe School Policy
Granite District's School Safety policy establishes penalties and procedures for:
Any threat or act of violence;
Possession of any type of weapon (real, look-alike, or pretend) regardless of intent;
Any form of organized gang
activity;
Any type of criminal behavior;
Destruction or defacement of school property;
Conduct in locations away from school that threatens or does harm to the school or persons associated with the school;
Students who violate the Safe School Policy may subject themselves to:
Automatic suspension from school
Referral to law enforcement
Mandatory parent/guardian conference
Referral to the Student Services Office
Placement in an alternative program
Expulsion from school or other action to resolve the problem
Mandatory one-year expulsion may be imposed for any incident involving firearms
Bullying amongst students or groups encompasses a variety of negative acts carried out repeatedly over time. It involves a real or perceived imbalance of power, with the more powerful student or group attacking those who are less powerful.
Bullying can take three forms: (1) physical –hitting, pushing, etc.); (2) verbal—taunting, malicious teasing, name calling, threats; and
(3) psychological—spreading rumors, manipulating social relationships or engaging in social exclusion, extortion or intimidation.
Parents who have knowledge of and students who are being bullied are strongly encouraged to contact the administration. Bullying will not be tolerated and is against Granite School District 's Safe School Policy. Offenders will be referred to the District's Safe School Committee and may be placed in an alternative educational setting.
Sexual Harassment
Any form of sexual harassment by staff, students, or others, including any inappropriate verbal, written, or physical conduct as defined below, is strictly prohibited. Violators of this policy will subject themselves to investigative and disciplinary procedures.
Definition
Any verbal, written, or physical conduct of a sexual nature that has the purpose or effect of creating
an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment, or unreasonably
interferes with a person's work or academic performance.

Any suggestion, request, demand, or pressure for sexual involvement, accompanied by an implied or explicit threat concerning one's grades, extracurricular standing, job, etc.
Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Derogatory, demeaning, or offensive jokes, teasing, or comments of a sexual nature;
Graphic remarks or sexual comments about an individual's body;
Sexually suggestive or obscene telephone calls, letters, notes, or invitations;
Grabbing, pinching, or touching of private areas;
Deliberate cornering, shouldering, or bumping in hallways;
Sexual gestures, unwanted pats or hugs, or any inappropriate touching;
Any form of sexual threat, intimidation, or exploitation;
Actual or attempted sexual assault, molestation, or rape;
Sexist remarks or gender-based stereotyping;
Offensive physical pranks, such as pantsing, mooning other students.
What to do:
Consider telling the person that you do not like what is happening and that you want it stopped. (This is not a requirement of the individual being harassed.)
Report the problem immediately to the school administration.
Do not feel embarrassed, intimidated, or reluctant to file a harassment report. Students will not be subject to retaliation or “put on trial” for reporting.
Reporting:
Anyone (student, staff member, parent, volunteer) who is a victim of sexual
harassment or has personal knowledge of sexual harassment taking place, is encouraged to immediately report the situation to the school administration.
Alcohol and Drugs
The illegal use, possession, distribution, sale, or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, over-the-counter prescription medications or intoxicants of any kind is prohibited in all Granite District schools, on school grounds, at school-sanctioned activities, or when students are being transported by buses.
Violations also include student use, possession, distribution, or sale of drug paraphernalia, imitation controlled substances or resorting where drugs are being used or possessed.
Throwing snowballs on school grounds is forbidden and is a violation of Granite District policy. On the first offense, the student will receive an After-School Detention (ASD) and a parent phone call; on the second offense, the student will be suspended from school.
School Property/Vandalism
Students are responsible for paying the current replacement cost for school books, supplies, and equipment if damaged.
Textbooks are on loan to students for their use during the school year. Textbooks are to be kept clean and carefully handled.
Students should write their names in the front cover of books in the event they are misplaced. Students who return books in good condition will be issued a $10 refund at the end of the year.
Thefts will be referred to the Granite
School District Police.
Suspension/In- School-Suspension
Students may be suspended by the administration for serious violations of school rules or policies. Parents will be notified if their child is suspended.
Examples of offenses that may result in suspension include fighting, harassment (including sexual harassment), bullying, threats or intimidation, theft, defiance, vandalism, dress code, or violation of the district's safe school policy.
Students at Wasatch Junior High School are expected to follow school and classroom rules. Teachers will provide disclosure statements for each class that will delineate behavioral expectations. Severe behavior problems will result in a referral to the administration and a parent conference.
Tobacco:
The possession of tobacco for students under the age of 19 is against Utah State Law law. Under the criminal code,violators are referred to Juvenile Court as “status” offenders.
Violators in schools, at school activities, or on school grounds will be issued citations by the school administration and/or law enforcement
authorities.

Trespassing
Visitors are always welcome; however, they should report to the main office. A visitor's pass will be provided to those individuals having reason to be in the school.
Students who are found on the school campus without checking in with the front office may be charged with trespassing.
Granite School Board policy prohibits visitors from other schools.
