Staying informed: Communication for incidents involving student safety

August 2013Granite Schools

During the upcoming school year, there will inevitably be instances in which special safety procedures will be implemented to ensure student safety. If/when incidents involving student safety occur, we strive to inform patrons as quickly as possible.

For example, if a school is placed on a soft lockdown (soft lockdown: an indirect threat to student safety that occurs in a neighborhood area; hard lockdown: a threat to student safety on school premises), there are certain communication protocols that will follow:

-As soon as the specifics of the situation are verified, the district will typically record a message that will be sent out to parents via telephone. These messages rely on contact information that was provided by parents at each school, thus it is essential for patrons to verify and update this information on a regular basis.

-In addition to phone calls, patron alerts and special messages are posted on the district’s Facebook page and other social media outlets.

As student safety is our primary concern, no information about an incident will be distributed until we can guarantee that every student is safe and that all information is accurate.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts to make our schools the best place for student learning.

Two questions regarding safety issues and lockdown.

    1. I took a tour of the new Olympus High, beautiful building. My question, how do you lock down the classrooms to an intruder in the school when the glass panels next to the classroom doors are actually larger than the doors themselves.
    2. The GSD policy requires the numbers of rooms to be clearly posted on the windows so as to allow police, swat and fire to be able to find rooms from the outside and yet Evergreen Junior High is the only school in the East Millcreek, Holladay area to properly display the numbers per GSD policy.
    Thanks

      Hey Bart…How are you?

1- There are security protocols to block those windows in a lockdown procedure. I am unable to discuss it further as to not compromise our security procedures.
2- If you are aware of specific schools who are not compliant, please submit those to communications@graniteschools.org and we will follow up to get them compliant.
