With the help of a new $1.2 million grant, thousands of students throughout the state will have access to extra resources to help them become proficient readers.
The “Read. Graduate. Succeed.” program has provided tutoring to 4,000 students in Utah with the help of AmeriCorps and other organizations. Several volunteers have stepped up to help students increase their reading skills through weekly tutoring sessions. The new grant is intended to double the number of students receiving services.
At Moss Elementary, where the announcement was made, volunteers from a plethora of businesses and organizations tutor reading to about 35 students.
“Almost all of our students made gains in reading last year because of this program,” said Moss Elementary principal Judith Simmons-Kissell.

How does one tap into this for their school? Is this part of Prosperity 2020?
Steven Powell says
The grant was given to The Utah Commission on Service and Volunteerism, which will work with members of the Utah AmeriCorps Literacy Initiative to place volunteers in more schools throughout the state.

Thank you for your reply, but how does a school get selected to be a beneficiary of this grant? Do schools apply for help through the Utah Commission on Service and Volunteerism or AmeriCorps? (I know, a lot of questions, just see a lot of potential here…)
Steven Powell says
It is a lot of great potential. Schools who have enlisted the help of volunteers have worked through AmeriCorps. Best option would be to contact the organization for information on how to partner.
Ben Horsley says
It is not part of prosperity 2020. The grant is administered through the Utah Commission on Service and Volunteerism.
