This week’s Service Star goes to Howard Driggs Elementary head custodian James Mason. Here’s what one Driggs parent had to say about his service:
“He has to be the most cheerful and hardworking custodian around. Every time I come across him at the school he is so cheerful and pleasant.”
“I’m really impressed that anyone can be in charge of cleaning up after 600 elementary students and be pleasant. I’m certainly not always pleasant about cleaning up after my 3 children, let alone 600 children. Yet he takes pride in his work and does it so cheerfully.”
“Early on in the school year when they had a ‘Back to School’ morning for the parents, he was fixing the front door when we came in and then just a few minutes later he was setting up the projector for the visual presentation by the principal.”
“His attitude reminds me of a quote by Martin Luther King Jr: ‘If it falls to your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music … Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.’
“If you replace ‘street sweeper’ with ‘custodian,’ you’d describe Mason perfectly.”
