Coming to class really pays off – literally.
Just ask Hunter High junior Kaylee Duke, who took home a 2001 Honda Accord as part of a contest at Hunter High School to increase attendance.
“My mom didn’t believe me when I told her,” Kaylee said after getting off the phone with her mother. “She just started crying and asking if it was a joke.”
Kaylee and hundreds of her peers were entered into a prize drawing for having perfect attendance from the start of school to Oct. 4 or from Oct. 7 to Nov. 22. Those who hadn’t missed a class for the entire year were given two entries.
Perfect attendance has doubled since Hunter implemented the contest. Administrators intend to duplicate the challenge for the spring semesters, even if there won’t be a car to giveaway.
Side note: This is Kaylee’s first car; she will receive her license in a few weeks. The car was generously donated by a Hunter High teacher.
