More than 130 students from Eisenhower Junior High’s National Junior Honor Society braved cold morning temperatures to keep an eight-year holiday tradition alive.
For the last several years, members of the NJHS have performed service hours by setting up luminaries at Valley View Mortuary in West Valley City. Thousands of electric candles are set up by volunteers, which are then lit that night for a spectacular display.
The luminaries are a way to earn service hours required for NJHS membership along with maintaining a 3.5 GPA and 3.0 CPA. Amelia Costin, NJHS Secretary remarked, “I know now it does take a lot of work and effort to put the lights up and honor those who have died.”
“I think it was a good experience to help serve the community,” said NJHS President Alex Barker.
