From the Granite Education Foundation:
A Need – Our Challenge
Child poverty and hunger are reaching alarming levels in Utah. In fact, 63% of Granite School District students are on free or reduced lunch — a measurement of students identified as being at or below poverty line standards. Tragically, many of these students are not eating well on weekends. They should eat seven meals between Friday lunch and Monday breakfast, but they don’t. When they don’t eat, they can’t do homework and they don’t play and exercise.
A Solution – Join Us!
The Utah Food Bank has developed their growing Backpack Program that provides children with easy-to-open-and-prepare food items to take home for the weekend. Granite Education Foundation has teamed up with KUTV News and Utah Food Bank for Utah’s Souper Bowl of Caring – a fund raising campaign to feed children right here in our Granite Community. Proceeds will be used to support the Granite Weekend Food Backpacks Program.
Souper Bowl of Caring
Utah’s Souper Bowl of Caring will officially kick off on January 13, 2014, and will run until mid February. This program was purposely set up to run in conjunction with the Super Bowl. It’s a time when many of us go to parties to watch the biggest game of the year with family and friends and consume a lot of food. This makes it a great time for us to remember those around us who are in need of our help. If we all pitch in, we can make a measurable impact on children’s lives.
We Can All Help
Students, their parents, faculty and staff in Granite School District, along with the entire Granite Community, will have the opportunity to participate in this program. Awards will be set up for the schools that raise the most money, opening up the possibility of being featured on a KUTV Newscast. KUTV News will be running an on air telethon during their newscast on January 31st. Donations made to KUTV News during that telethon will be split among the districts statewide. Donate directly to Granite Education Foundation where 100% of donations received will be directed to kids in the Granite School District.
More information will become available soon. To donate, go to granitekids.org, or call the Foundation at 385 646 GIVE.
