Skyline High School’s Joe Pereira was dubbed the 2013 boys swimming and diving National Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS).
Coach Joe, as he’s known among his athletes, has been coaching aquatic sports at Skyline for nine years. Under his direction Skyline has won three boys and six girls state swimming titles, including last year’s state girls championship.
“Swimming is sort of ‘old school’,” Joe said of the sport. “A lot of students today want things quicker, but you cant succeed in swimming unless you’re willing to work hard every day.”
Coach Joe was honored by students and Skyline faculty during a recent swim meet against rival Olympus High.
