Granite District athletes heat up winter sports

GSD student athletes had a lot to celebrate during recent state competitions for winter high school sports.

Wrestling

Taylorsville High School’s Roy Nash repeated as 5A state champ in the 220 lbs. division. Roy completed his second undefeated season with a 37-0 record.

Colton Grossaint of Kearns High School took the 4A state title in the 220 lbs. division. Colton’s victory is his second consecutive state wrestling championship.

A number of other Granite athletes took home medals at the state competition:

Jacob Knapp, Cottonwood – 5th place, 120 lbs. (5A)
Jed Diederich, Cottonwood – 3rd place, 145 lbs. (5A)
Brayden Nuffer, Taylorsville – 5th place, 195 lbs. (5A)
Dalton Mortensen, Granger – 3rd place, 285 lbs. (5A)
Caleb Monsen, Skyline – 5th place, 120 lbs. (4A)
Lukas Erickson, Olympus – 4th place, 126 lbs. (4A)
Austin Kennedy, Kearns – 5th place, 132 lbs. (4A)
Porter Treanor, Olympus – 4th place, 138 lbs. (4A)
Tosh Wilcox, Olympus – 3rd place, 170 lbs. (4A)
Jordan Crofts, Skyline – 2nd place, 195 lbs. (4A)
Peter Schafer, Olympus – 6th place, 195 lbs. (4A)

Swimming & Diving

Skyline High School swimmers dominated the 4A competition, winning both men’s and women’s state team titles.

Skyline’s Lillian Moore broke an eight-year-old state record in the 100-yard butterfly, and teammates Sophie Brooks, Shelby Dibble, Claire Brooks, and Audrey Miller set new 4A records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard free relay.

Skyline boys also broke barriers, with James Sorensen, D Steed, Adam Shelton, and Mckay Chamberlain setting a new 4A record in the 200-yard free relay.

The Kearns High School boys swimming team took second place in the 4A state tournament. The Cougars had six top 6 finishes in seven events.

Athletes in the 5A classification also had successful times at the tournament:

Claire Jackson, Hunter – 1st place, 100-yard freestyle
Claire Jackson, Shae Simonson, Chelsea Weaver, Mikayla Bambrick, Hunter – 2nd place, 200-yard freestyle relay; 6th place, 400-yard freestyle relay
Andrew Anderson, Cottonwood – 4th place, 100-yard freestyle
Kyle Darling, Hunter – 3rd place, 500-yard freestyle
Jonah Simon, Cottonwood – 2nd place, 100-yard breaststroke
SethKohler, Jaxzen Corbridge, Brayden Corbridge, Kyle Darling, Hunter – 5th place, 200-yard freestyle relay

Andrew Anderson, Christopher Ferrin, Caleb Roundy, Jonah Simon, Cottonwood – 6th place, 400-yard freestyle relay

Granite athletes also found success in the state diving competition:

Raegan Callaway, Cottonwood – 2nd place, girls
Elaina Thomas, Skyline – 4th place, girls
Taylor Aucutt, Olympus – 5th place, girls

Granite School District athletes took home a total of 127 medals (top 6 finish) in the state swim tournament.
