Fifth and sixth grade students at Mill Creek Elementary cordially welcomed their special guest, Congressman Jim Matheson, with polite handshakes, respectful applause, and questions that would be on par with any political pundit.
During a visit in which he delivered boxes of books from the Library of Congress to the school, Matheson gave ample time for the students to better know their congressman. Some of the questions asked included:
“What led to the government shutdown?”
“What are your thoughts on funding for public education?”
“Have you since changed your position on the Affordable Care Act?”
“Are you planning to run for the U.S. Senate?”
With the help of the students’ respectful dialogue, the atmosphere in the room allowed for honest feedback from the congressman.
Other students sought to inquire if Matheson was up to speed on his knowledge of politics and government.
“Can you name all nine Supreme Court justices?”
“What are the three branches of government?”
“How well do you feel you know the Constitution?”
