Gearld Wright Elementary principal Doug Johnson wore a special suit in welcoming Superintendent Martin Bates to the school: one with an enormous red bowtie, a multicolored stovepipe hat, and simulated fur.
It’s one of the few times of the year when a ‘Cat in the Hat’ costume is entirely appropriate.
It’s time for Read Across America week.
The annual program, sponsored by the National Education Association, calls for “every child in every community to celebrate reading.” The event coincides with the birthday of author Dr. Seuss, who was born 110 years ago.
Dr. Bates signaled the start of the celebration by reading “The King’s Stilts” to second-graders at Wright Elementary.
