Fourth-graders face off in the kitchen in first stage of national culinary competition

March 2014Granite Schools

Twenty-four young chefs from across Granite School District came together at the GEC Cafe to create their homemade healthy sandwich recipes for judging and sampling as part of a national contest of edible entries.

The 2014 Future Chefs National Challenge sponsored by GSD Food Services provider Sodexo was designed to promote awareness of better food choices while also encouraging students to get active in the kitchen. Granite joins other participating districts in 30 states for the contest.

Each student recreated their recipe at the GEC Cafe kitchen with the help of district food workers at GTI culinary arts students. Samples were judged on taste, texture, healthy attributes, presentation, and use of a featured ingredient (e.g., turkey, tuna, tortillas, black beans, etc.).

Here’s the list of winners:

Most Original: Saydee Thornton, Neil Armstrong Academy – The Honey Salmon Sammy
Best in Healthy Attributes: Tatum Jensen, Oakwood Elementary – Mine is Better BLT
Best Ease of Preparation: Megan Rowan-Allen, Academy Park Elementary – Tuna Bean Sandwich
Most Kid-Friendly: Kalleigh Lowe, Diamond Ridge Elementary – Chicken Salad Sandwich
Best in Tast: Brooklynne Webb, Hillsdale Elementary – Apple-Cinnamon Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Best in Plate Presentation: Delaney Sierra-Quintero, West Kearns Elementary – Pita Bread Sandwich
Grand Prize Winner: Ashley Gallagher, Twin Peaks Elementary – The Almond on the Roll

Ashley will represent Granite School District in the regional Future Chefs competition on April 8.
