Every time Scott Eyre received a new ball cap he would write two phrases on the inside flaps: “Work hard” and “Have fun.”
Both counsels were learned in part from Cyprus High baseball coach Bob Fratto, who coached Scott and his brother Willie during their time at Cyprus in the 1990s. The brothers were two of the most outstanding pitchers to come from Utah.
In recognition for their success on and off the field, Scott and Willie Eyre were inducted into the Cyprus High Hall of Fame. During the ceremony, Coach Fratto was quick to point out that the two brothers are very similar to the students he sees today.
“You guys are just like these two,” he said to the crowd of students. “I travel the school and think about the talent I see. I don’t think all of you realize what power you have.”
As a supplement to Fratto’s remarks, Scott and Willie thanked the student body for being Cyprus Pirates through and through.
The Eyre’s are well known in the Magna community for their exceptional athletic talent.
Scott was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1991 and went on to play for the Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and the Philadelphia Phillies, where he won a World Series ring.
Willie was drafted in 1999 by the Minnesota Twins and went on to play for the Texas Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles before retiring.
