Board Meeting Report – August 2015

August 2015Granite Schools

Truth in Taxation Hearing

The board approved the 2015-2016 budget as presented by Mitch Robison, Director of Budget Development, and set the tax rate at 0.006978. This rate means two tax adjustments. One adjustment is required by Senate Bill 97, which was passed during the 2015 Legislative Session. This bill requires a statewide Basic Tax Rate increase to generate $7.5 million in additional revenue. This translates to a $44.24 increase on a $235,200 home (average home value for Granite School District).

The second adjustment is due to the Charter School Local Replacement. State statute requires school districts to contribute 25 percent of their District Average Per Pupil Revenue to local charter schools. This levy will increase from $1.79 million to $2.65 million in the upcoming fiscal year, which would require the District to either cut $859,119 in services to students to send to charter schools, or replace the funds with a %0.5 increase in tax revenues. This adjustment would equal $5.17 on a $235,200 home.

Following the presentation the board opened the meeting to public comment. Three citizens spoke in opposition to tax increases. The board then voted unanimously to adopt the proposed 2015-2016 budget.
