There is a population of exceptionally high-performing students whose needs cannot be met without specialized programming and/or accommodations.
Granite School District’s Advanced Learner Program addresses the academic and emotional needs of students that have advanced content knowledge and skills, and/or show evidence of extraordinary learning ability in one or more specific disciplines.
The testing window for placement in Granite School District’s Advanced Learner Programs is as follows:
Monday, October 12 – Friday, December 11 for Grades 3-6
Thursday, January 7 – Friday, March 4 for Grades K-2
It is not necessary to have your child tested each year. However, children who want to be considered for placement in a third grade advanced learner cluster group must be tested in second grade. Students in grades K-5 who would like to be considered for the Advanced Learning Center Programs must participate this school year in the assessments.
In addition, sixth graders interested in taking Gifted & Talented classes in junior high must also be tested. It is not necessary for sixth graders registering for honors classes to be tested. If you would like your child to participate in the Advanced Learner testing, please notify your child’s school by Monday, October 12.

What does it mean to be placed with a cluster group. My son tested for gifted and talented and I received a letter stating he is gifted and talented. When I went to SEP’s to meet with his teacher she had no clue he was gifted and talented. When I talked to the principal she said they don’t do anything different for the gifted and talented students. She said he would not be in any different group and they do not have a gifted and talented teacher. So I’m a bit confused.

Kim,
The Curriculum Department would be more than happy to discuss options and how clusters work in detail. Lynn Farnsworth is in charge of the Gifted & Talented section. You can get in touch with her by calling 385-646-4620.

More information for parents on what exactly this means would be very beneficial. When I was in school the gifted students were in an accelerated class all their own. My cold goes to the same school I did but this process is very confusing for parents with little information to explain what happens.
