Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

November 2015Granite Schools

Can you name the American Indian Tribes living in Utah?

Most Utah citizens would be able identify the Ute Tribe as a prominent group, but the state is also home to Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, and Navajo groups.

November is designated Native American Heritage Month in recognition of the ancestry and traditions of indigenous peoples.

Oakwood Elementary received a grant from the Utah State Library Division to enhance educational opportunities concerning indigenous people in U.S. and Utah history.

The school purchased materials for the library and brought in several guest speakers, including Nino Reyos who shared his melodious flute music and spent time talking about Native American veterans and the Code Talkers in WWII.

We want to extend a note of appreciation to the Granite News for coming to visit Oakwood
Elementary School during the HONORING OF INDIGENOUS MONTH, NOVEMBER 2015!!
The teachers are amazing ! They are great to want to take educational opportunities to
enhance learning and promote critical thinking with our young people. Native history
has had limited acknowledgement in History; yet it is such an integral part of American
History. The stories are not easy to hear; but are real! The children share that learning
history is so important to learn from past successes and mistakes in order to make better
    decisions for our future.
    Thank you again!
