Every year, PTA organizations across the country invite students to create original works of music, art, dance, and literature for the annual Reflections contest.
This past year’s theme was “Within Reach,” and two Granite students created works that were so well received at the school, regional and state level that they were entered into the national level of the competition.
Allison Sink of Olympus High School was given an Award of Merit in the 2D visual arts category. Her piece “Through the Window” is a reminder that “Places may not be seen clearly at first, but they are just through the window. All you have to do is open it.”
Joshua Johnson of Fox Hills Elementary received an Award of Excellence in the literature category. His essay “Creation Within Reach” details his desire to work hard to become a doctor so he can help save the lives of people like his grandfather, who is awaiting a kidney transplant.
[Referring to a kidney] “I will dissect you. I will study you. I will build you. I will grow you. A bean-shaped miracle in a medical garden.”
