Granite Library Presentations at UELMA 2017
Last week the Utah Educational Library Media Association held their Spring conference at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City. Many of our library media educational technology specialists (LMETS) and media clerks attended the conference, and several presented sessions at the conference themselves. In addition to the above sessions, Quinn Rollins, Granite’s Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, attended and gave an excellent presentation entitled “Beyond Batman: Graphic Novels as Serious Texts.” Author Emily Wing Smith, a Taylorsville High School alumnus and occasional substitute teacher for Granite, gave the inspiring and relatable morning keynote address on her personal childhood experiences that led her to writing.
We really appreciate all of those from Granite School District who shared their time and expertise in these sessions. We further look forward to next week’s UCET 2017 conference, in which many of our elementary school technology specialists (STS) will present breakout sessions, as well as more of our LMETS.

Upcoming Event: #GSDEdTech Teacher Chat, March, 9, 2017
We are excited to announce the return of the #GSDEdTech Teacher Chat to your Twitter feeds. This first in a new series of monthly chats will happen on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 4-4:30 P.M via the #GSDEdTech hashtag on Twitter. The Educational Technology department will sponsor this monthly educational chat to provide an easy way for diverse educators throughout the district to connect with each other and share ideas specific to our community. The chat is open to all K-12 educators, staff members, and any interested community members.
Our March 2017 chat will focus on Information Literacy. We hope that you will join us in sharing and learning about tools and strategies for increasing our students’ information literacy and resource evaluation skills in whatever grade or content area you teach. Look for the chat questions and more details to be posted on our twitter feed next week. If you are new to twitter chats, you can find out how to join them here.

The STEM Action Center of Utah has two grant opportunities currently open and accepting applications from K-12 public schools. Please click on the links below for more information about each grant and to submit applications.

Spotlight: First Graders and the 4 Cs with Breakout EDU
In this spotlight video, first grade students at Bennion Elementary work with school technology specialist Amber Palmer to solve critical thinking puzzles as part of a Breakout EDU activity. The video also highlights the centrality of the Four Cs of 21st Century Learning (Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity) to our teaching and learning practices in educational technology. Highlights from Granite’s FIRST LEGO League 2017 Qualifying Tournament

Granite School District welcomed 28 FIRST LEGO League teams to the 3rd GSD sponsored qualifying tournament on Saturday January 28th at Granger High School. Students participated in robot games, showed off their ability to work collaboratively on a problem, explained to engineers how they designed and built their robot, and presented a solution in the form of a product or service to enhance the relationship between animals and humans.
