If there is a situation that requires students and staff to remain in their classrooms or stay out of certain areas, school administration will issue a Hold. Examples would be an altercation in the hallway between students, a student or staff member experiencing a medical incident, or a temporary maintenance issue.

Students and teachers are to remain in their classroom or area, even if there is a scheduled class change, until the all-clear is announced. Students and staff outside of the building should remain outside unless the administration directs otherwise.

Secure

The next type of protocol is called a Secure protocol. A Secure is initiated when there is a potential threat to student safety off campus. For example, local police may require a school to initiate a Secure if there is police activity in a nearby neighborhood, or if there is some form of hazard near the school.

During a Secure, students and staff are brought inside the building and all exterior doors are locked. In a situation where someone is actively seeking to cause harm, staff members will use situational awareness and lead students to either:

Avoid the threat by staying alert, escaping quickly, creating distance, and seeking safety.

Deny access to their location by locking, barricading, limiting access, and staying quiet.

Defend themselves as a last resort by acting aggressively to survive.

Aid those around them by calling 911, stopping any bleeding, and staying calm.

State and federal law enforcement agencies encourage use of Avoid, Deny, Defend, Aid for schools and businesses during unpredictable situations where someone is looking to cause harm.
