—Update Thursday, February 23, 2023 4:37 a.m.—
UPDATE from Granite School District
Good morning to our students and families. As of 4am and after monitoring road conditions overnight, this record breaking winter storm which impacted the entire state yesterday, continues to present transportation challenges for tens of thousands of our families and employees. We have had crews out all night checking neighborhoods throughout the district. While we had hoped for the best and are ready to receive students this morning in our schools, many of our hardest hit neighborhoods still have not had their streets cleared and still have upwards of 2 feet of snow in those streets and are unable to be traversed. This is not specific to any region, but is prevalent from Morningside and Upland Terrace in the East to Diamond Ridge and Kearns in the West, and is impacting every region of the district. As such, we simply cannot in good conscience proceed with in person instruction with so many families and employees unable to even leave their homes.
The district will be switching to a distance learning day for all schools on Thursday, February 23, 2023. This means that ALL learning for the day will be moved online. You will be notified by your school and teachers with respect to lesson plans, class assignments, and other duties for your students. Please review the following information and follow up with your respective teacher(s) and school if you have any questions. Above all else, safety is our goal as we work to provide support to our students throughout the day.
Students should remain home Thursday and check their email, canvas, google classroom, paper packets, and other resources provided by their teachers to follow up on assignments and instruction. If your child does not have learning materials, please reach out to your school to access resources. All Preschool classes are canceled Thursday and there will be no distance instruction for those students.
With respect to extra-curricular activities and events scheduled for Thursday, we expect to update administrators later in the day on how to proceed. Some activities may be able to be held as scheduled and your individual school, teachers and coaches will follow up with you directly as appropriate.
Please stay safe and thank you for your patience and support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Granite School District
—End of Update—
Dear Granite School District Parents and Families,
We just experienced a significant winter storm in our area. We are sensitive to the fact that many of our hardest hit neighborhoods are still struggling to dig out and many have not had their streets cleared. We expect that many of those situations may be resolved over night as our local municipal and county partners continue to clear snow from this massive storm. As such, we are initiating a late start for tomorrow, Thursday, February 23rd.
With a delayed start, the following changes will occur:
- Elementary schools will be pushed back 2 hours and 5 minutes to avoid bussing conflicts.
- Junior High School start times will be pushed back 2 hours,
- High Schools will start at 9:30 a.m.
- All breakfast programs will be canceled.
- All a.m. pre-schools classes will be canceled.
- All a.m. kindergarten classes will be canceled.
- All p.m. preschool classes will NOT be canceled.
- All p.m. kindergarten and all-day kindergarten will NOT be canceled.
- All classes and activities normally held before the traditional school starting time will be canceled.
- All a.m. GTI classes will be canceled.
- All programs housed at the Roosevelt Campus will be canceled, (i.e., GAPP, Safe Schools Programs).
- All morning classes at the Jones Center will be canceled.
- Class times for Hartvigsen will be as follows: 9:35 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
- Class times for POST will be as follows: 9:35 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
We will continue to monitor conditions throughout the night and will evaluate the situation and make a final determination by 5am so any changes can be communicated in a timely manner. This may include the possibility of an additional distance learning day. All notifications will occur by text message and posted to our Emergency Notifications page at www.graniteschools.org. We will also share these notifications and any updates on our social media platforms and with local news media.
As a reminder, you can check the status of your child’s school bus using the Here Comes the Bus app, available on The App Store and Google Play.
Please remember that we trust parents to make the ultimate call when it comes to their child’s safety. Not all streets are plowed at the same time, and snow totals may differ from region to region. Please allow yourselves extra time in the morning to navigate potential adverse weather conditions and remember to dress your students in warm clothing including boots, jackets, hats, and gloves. If you do not think it is safe to send or take your students to school during inclement weather, please keep them home. School officials will be lenient regarding tardiness and absences during winter weather.
Thank you for your support and have a nice evening.
Sincerely,
Granite School District
