The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act of 1987 is a federal law that ensures educational stability for students experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Homelessness?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The McKinney-Vento Act defines homelessness as \u201cindividuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.\u201d That can look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sharing housing with another person or family due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in a motel or hotel;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in a shelter or temporary housing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in a car, park, campground, public space, or abandoned building;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in housing with infestation, mold, overcrowding, or does not have heat, electricity, or water; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a student seeking enrollment without an accompanying parent and not in foster care or state\u2019s custody.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does McKinney-Vento do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the law, the McKinney-Vento Act ensures immediate enrollment in the student\u2019s neighborhood school or last school attended. It also ensures students have access to the same opportunities offered to all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The McKinney-Vento Act provides federal funding to states for the purpose of supporting district programs that serve students experiencing homelessness.
