Sample Proficiency Scale

This what proficiency means in student terms.

Four colored boxes with bike riders in each one. Text: Proficiency Scale. 1 - Below Proficient: I still need help from my teacher to do simpler parts of the standard. 2 - Approaching Proficient: I am getting close to meeting expectations and I can do the simpler parts of the standard. 3 - Proficient: I meet expectations described in the standard and can do them independently. 4 - Highly Proficient: I have a deep understanding of the standard and can demonstrate it in complex ways.

This is a sample proficiency scale for Secondary Mathematics 2 – 1st Quarter.

Measurement Topic: Interpret Functions (F.IF)

Level 4

The student exceeds expectation by utilizing in-depth inferences and applications of the standard(s)

The Student:
Given any form of a quadratic function, find all the key features of the graph. Interpret these in terms of context. (F.IF.8*)

Sample Tasks:
A model rocket is launched from ground level. The function ht=-16t2+160t models the height h (measured in feet) of the rocket after time t (measured in seconds). Find the zeros and the vertex of the function. Explain what each means in context of the problem.

The value of some stock can be represented by Vx=2×2-8x+10, where x is the number of months after January 2012. What is the lowest value V(x) will reach, and when did that occur?

Level 3

The student meets expectation by demonstrating knowledge, understanding, and skills as described in the standard(s).

The Student:
Uses the process of factoring and completing the square to show zeros, extreme values and symmetry of the graph. (F.IF.8*)

Sample Tasks:
Find the zeros of fx= x2-11x-24.

Find the vertex of fx=3×2+18x-2, tell whether it is a max or min.

Find the axis of symmetry and vertex for the function fx=4×2+8x-7, and tell whether the vertex is a max or min.

Level 2

The student demonstrates knowledge of the simpler details and processes of the standard(s).

The Student:
Given an appropriate form, identify zeros, extreme values and the axis of symmetry of a quadratic function. (F.IF.8*)

Sample Tasks:
Find zeros of fx=2x(x-4)

Find the vertex of fx= (x+2)2-3, tell whether it is a max or min.

Find the axis of symmetry using x=-b2a for the function fx=x2+14x-1

Level 1

With help, student exhibits a partial knowledge of some of the simpler details and processes.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities are provided on-grade instruction with the necessary services and/or accommodations in accordance with their IEP or 504 plan to enable them to meet the proficiency for each standard of their enrolled grade level of course.
