Choose Gang Free Program<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Granite School District collaborates with the Unified Police Department and Salt Lake Area Gang Project to <\/span>implement<\/span> the Choose Gang Free <\/span>(CGF) <\/span>program to Granite\u2019s target <\/span>school<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> The <\/span>CGF <\/span>5<\/span>th<\/span> grade prevention<\/span> curriculum is <\/span>taught by Granite Prevention Specialists.<\/span> The purpose of this program is to educate youth on the realities of gang involvement and to <\/span>empower them to <\/span>engage with pro-social peers and extra-curricular activities; as well as develop a plan for dealing with negative peer pressure. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/span>The CGF<\/span> secondary intervention<\/span> and secondary prevention <\/span>services <\/span>are facilitated by CGF Advocates<\/span> who work <\/span>full-time in <\/span>target<\/span> schools<\/span>. At the core of\u202f<\/span>Check & Connect<\/span><\/i>\u202fis a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Students are referred to\u202f<\/span>Check & Connect<\/span><\/i>\u202fwhen they show warning signs of disengaging from school, such as poor attendance, behavioral issues, and\/or low grades.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n In\u202f<\/span>Check & Connect<\/span><\/i>, the “<\/span>Check<\/span><\/b>” component refers to the process where mentors systematically monitor student performance variables (e.g., absences, tardies, behavioral referrals, grades), while the “<\/span>Connect<\/span><\/b>” component refers to mentors providing personalized, timely interventions to help students solve problems, build skills, and enhance competence. Mentors work with caseloads of students and families for at least two years, functioning as liaisons between home and school and striving to build constructive family-school relationships. Completion of the survey is optional. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Pre\/Post Survey (for students participating in any <\/span><\/b>GSD Choose Gang Free<\/span><\/b> or GSD Check & Connect<\/span><\/b>)<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n After Advocates and Check and Connect Mentors receive the signed <\/span>Parent-Guardian Consent Form<\/span><\/i>\/<\/span><\/i> Request for Release of Student Records<\/span><\/i>, students will complete the Pre- Survey<\/span> to provide data which will be used to assess program effectiveness, including but not limited to: Prevention Needs Assessment Survey (used to measure the factors that place students at risk for problem behaviors; the factors that protect students from problem behaviors; and basic demographics) and Youth Risk Behavior Survey (used to measure antisocial behaviors, health behaviors, and school safety).
