Each elementary and junior high school has a Safe Routes walking map, found at (Safe Routes Utah). These maps are distributed to students and their parents at the first of each school year.
Safe Walking Route maps are updated each year by the school principal and community council.
Use Safe Walking Routes
Every school in Granite School District has established safe walking routes for all students living within 1.5 miles (elementary) or 2 miles (secondary) of the school. These routes were planned with the help of law enforcement and traffic specialists, and are reviewed and modified (as needed) annually. Visit your school’s website or contact your principal for your safe walking route.
Know Where Crossing Guards are Stationed*
Local law enforcement agencies employ hundreds of crossing guards to help students safely cross heavily trafficked roads near GSD schools. These individuals keep a close eye on student safety, and operate school zone speed limit area signs. Use their services, whenever possible, to cross roads.
Be Safe in Crosswalks*
Not every crosswalk will have a crossing guard. Follow these best practices:
- Only cross the street at crosswalks. Never jaywalk across the street or cross outside of a crosswalk.
- Walk in groups with other students, whenever possible.
- Wear bright colored clothing.
- Stop and look both ways before crossing. Be aware that drivers may not always see you; don’t depend on them stopping.
- Walk, don’t run, as you approach and pass through any intersection.
Walk With an Adult or in a Group
Students younger than 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult when walking to and from school. For older students, consider organizing a neighborhood walking group with parents taking turns, or simply meet up with friends to walk to and from school. Junior high/high schools students should walk with at least one other person.
Be Conscious of Traffic
- Do your best to make eye contact with drivers before crossing a street.
- Be aware that drivers may not always see you; don’t depend on them stopping.
- Wear light-colored or reflective clothing during dark mornings.
- Do not cross behind a bus or between parked cars, where a driver cannot see you.
*Local school districts and schools do not have the legal authority to maintain, manage or staff crosswalks, as those are located on public roadways. We work collaboratively with local municipalities and law enforcement agencies to determine safe walking routes.
