L.A.T.

Lancer Action Team is service learning- leadership club at Granger High School.  For the past ten years, we have been working with The Harman Recreation Center in various activities.  This year we have done a lot with the seniors including playing BINGO with them every month providing refreshments and prizes, interviewing them and recording their history in a scrapbook, taking them to breakfast and a movie, and making them 72 hour emergency preparedness  kits.   We will also be hosting a dinner and dance called the Senior Ball for them April 25.    This project started in the fall of this year.  Last year we made emergency kits for our school, and we wanted to extend this project into our community.  Granger High School and the surrounding areas are located on the Granger fault line, so the prospects of an emergency are high.  We wanted to help our friends the senior citizens because they are some of the most susceptible people in the community.  We received money from various sources Utah State office of Education,  Learn and Serve America grant, Youthlinc grant, and West Valley City.  At first, we decided that we had enough funds for only 60 kits, but we found the need was great and the senior citizens were eager to learn about preparedness and we did not want to turn any away, so we searched for more money, and decided to make 80 kits instead.  The project took a lot of hard work.  We spent hours comparing prices, buying supplies, and organizing the equipment, so it could be distributed quickly and easily.  We decided to let each senior make their own kit, so they would be able to feel that they were part of the process. We have done much more than provide the kits to the seniors.  We taught three classes about what to do in an emergency, and how they can prepare now.  We also invited the West Valley police and fire department to teach them about self-defense and how to plan a fire escape route for their homes.  We assembled binders with information on preparedness and sheets where they could record their personal information so it was in a central location in the case of an emergency.   This has been a great project.  We have become much closer to the seniors through this experience.   We have called our project over the past 10 years with the seniors and Granger High school “Bridging the Gap”.    The students at Granger High School have truly bridged the gap between generations.  Today many of the senior citizens in West Valley are more prepared in case of an emergency thanks to the Lancer Action Team.

Parents, Students and Supports of Granger High School:

First term ended on October 30th.  Already one-fourth of the year is over.  We have set up many programs that can help students.  We have after school tutoring programs, after school credit recovery programs and after school citizenship recovery programs.  We are encouraging all students who might need to make up academic credit or citizenship credit to see their counselors immediately for credit make-up.  Don’t wait for spring because it will be too late.  Our counselors are sending home letters to parents to remind them if their students are off-line for graduation and are in need of credit recovery.
