Granite School District’s greatest strength is the diverse community and families from various backgrounds and experiences. At Granite, creating a safe learning environment is a top priority. We are committed to ensuring that all students—regardless of immigration status, religion, disability, nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation—are respected and have access to a quality education. Below are answers to common questions about immigration policies and freedom from discrimination and harassment.
Does immigration status impact my student’s education?
No. All children in the United States are entitled to equal access to free public education, regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents. This constitutional right, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, ensures that public education is accessible to all children without exception.
Does the district ask families for proof of citizenship or immigration status.
No. Granite School District does not ask for or trade immigration status information for enrollment or participation in programs such as transportation, free/reduced-price meals, academic activities, or extracurriculars.
Would my student’s school or the district ever share my student’s citizenship or immigration status?
No. Schools do not ask for or maintain such information. Records like birth certificates, required by Utah law to verify identity and age, do not include citizenship status.
Can my student records be subpoenaed or requested by government agencies?
Granite School District does not collect information on immigration status unless it is voluntarily provided (e.g., for foreign student visas). The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)protects student records from being shared with third parties, including immigration officials, except in specific situations such as valid subpoenas, court orders, or emergencies involving public safety.
Does the Granite Police Department (GPD) play a role in federal immigration investigations?
Granite Police Department’s primary mission is to promote a safe learning environment at schools. Members of GPD do not inquire about immigration status. Additionally, GPD does not interact with immigration officials, unless there is an emergency situation concerning the immediate safety of students or employees.
What should I do if I fear being detained while my child is at school?
If a parent or guardian is detained during school hours, the district’s crisis and emergency response team will step in to support affected students. We strongly encourage families to update emergency contact information through the Parent Portal or by contacting your child’s school.
What if I have questions about my citizenship, immigration status, or legal rights?
The district cannot provide legal advice. For accurate information and support, consult a licensed immigration attorney. Community organizations and legal aid groups may also be valuable resources.
What resources are available for families with limited English proficiency or who are new tothe district?
The Student Access & Opportunity Department provides comprehensive resources for families with limited English proficiency or those resettling in our district. Contact them at (385-646-4205) for assistance tailored to your needs.
