Dear Granite District Parents, Students, and Staff,
Canvas is back up and functioning normally for students and teachers.
As indicated in our message to parents last night, it’s our understanding that the outage was due to a cybersecurity incident that impacted Instructure (the makers of Canvas) nationwide. This was not an incident that was specific to Granite School District, and our internal systems remain secure. We are still awaiting more details from Instructure about what specific Granite data may have been compromised and we will share more details when they become available.
Thank you,
Granite School District
—- End of Update —-
Dear Granite District Parents,
Granite School District recently received an initial communication from Instructure (the company that owns Canvas) indicating that they have experienced a nationwide data breach that included Granite data. Canvas is a learning management system used by educational institutions across the nation, including jr. high and sr. high schools in Granite. We don’t believe this is impacting our elementary students.
According to Instructure, “…the data involved appears to include personal information. At this time, we have found no indication that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved.”
At this time, no action is required from Granite students and parents other than remaining alert for possible suspicious communications. We are still awaiting additional verifiable information from Instructure with data specific to Granite School District and we will be working with our partners at the state level to monitor developments.
Thank you for your patience as we work with this vendor to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and restore access to Canvas. We will update you as soon as more information becomes available.
