Utah’s public schools are the beneficiary of 96 percent of all trust lands. Revenue generated from school trust lands is transferred into the Permanent School Fund, growing the endowment for public schools. Income earned from this permanent fund is distributed annually to individual School Community Councils using a per-pupil formula and averages $40,000 per school annually. These School Land Trust dividends are often the only discretionary funds available to schools. Each School Community Council identifies the critical needs of its school and determines the best use of its School Land Trust dividend. Programs range from purchasing computers and hiring teachers and classroom aides, to funding college preparatory, music, and reading programs.
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures immediate enrollment and educational stability for homeless children and youth. McKinney-Vento provides federal funding to states for the purpose of supporting district programs that serve homeless students. The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”
You can apply for McKinney-Vento Assistance by first filling out a McKinney-Vento Form (above) and submitting it to your school’s main office. Once that is complete, you can use our McKinney-Vento Request Form. The Request form can only be fulfilled if the previous form has first been submitted.
The Elementary And Secondary Education Act (EASA) is designed to help disadvantaged children reach high academic standards. Properly trained paraprofessionals (teaching assistants) can play important roles in improving student achievement in Title I schools by reinforcing and augmenting a teacher’s effort in the classroom. The ESEA requires that these paraeducators meet “highly qualified” standards. (ESEA Section 1119)
Paraeducators can demonstrate they have attained “highly qualified” status by:
- Obtaining an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Successfully completing at least 2 years of study or 48 semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education.
- Successfully pass the Para Pro test which demonstrates knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.
- Granite School District, 2500 South State Street, on the 4th Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. of each month. Registration in advance is requested.
