Air Quality Guidelines
During Utah’s winter inversions, many parents and families wonder how schools decide whether students go outside for recess. Student health and safety are our top priorities, and schools monitor local air quality daily while following guidance from the Utah Department of Health to determine whether recess is held indoors or outdoors. Decisions are based on Air Quality Index (AQI) and PM2.5 levels, with extra precautions for students who have respiratory symptoms or medical conditions that make them more sensitive to poor air quality. When air quality is unhealthy, some or all students may remain indoors to ensure their well-being. Families can check current air quality at air.utah.gov, and parents are encouraged to notify their school if their child has a condition that may require limited outdoor activity.
