Youth in Custody (YESS)

Mission Statement

To provide a safe, respectful, nurturing environment where youth, in the custody of the State of Utah, will experience academic success, while discovering and developing their social, emotional, and intellectual potential.

Coordination

We work with the following agencies to provide educational services at various sites within:

  • Granite School District
  • Juvenile Justice Services
  • Valley Mental Health
  • Division of Youth Services
  • Division of Family and Child Services

Eligibility and Student Referral

A student is eligible for Granite District YESS if s/he is in the custody of the State of Utah through the Department of Human Services, Division of Child and Family Services, Youth Corrections or in Tribal Custody.

Educational Services

In YESS, a written Student Education/Occupation Plan is designed to address academic and behavioral needs for each student. In addition to the regular core curriculum, students receive a variety of services which may include any of the following:

  • academic assessment
  • individual instruction
  • low student/teacher ratio
  • behavioral interventions
  • cognitive skills training
  • technology training
  • transition/vocational service
  • tracking and compilation of high school credits
