Procedures to homeschool a student is governed by state statute and establishes the following guidelines. (see Utah Code §53G-6-204). A parent or guardian desiring to homeschool their child must:
- File a notice of intent: A parent/guardian must provide a one-time initial notification of intent to homeschool with the Granite School District’s Home School Office for each child when beginning to homeschool.

- After the notice of intent is received, an excuse certificate acknowledging the homeschool program will be sent to the parent/guardian within 30 days.
- There are no required days of instruction nor required subjects for homeschoolers in Utah. The parent is solely responsible for the “selection of instructional materials and textbooks; the time, place, and method of instruction; and the evaluation of the home school instruction.
- Note: Utah Code §53G-6-204 was amended on May 7, 2025, replacing the affidavit requirement with a notice of intent. The rest of the requirements remain the same. If a parent/guardian previously filed an affidavit for a student, they are not required to submit a new notice of intent for that child.
IEP, 504, & Special Services Notice
Notice to parents/guardians of students with an IEP, 504, or other special services:
If you choose to home school your student, you may be waiving your rights to receive some or all of the special education, 504, or other special services they would receive if enrolled in a public school in Granite School District; unless, you have arranged for dual enrollment consistent with Utah State Law, Section 53A-11-102.5 and Utah State Board of Education rule R277-438. It is recommended that you meet with the IEP, 504, or other special services team at your school regarding your student’s rights to special needs services before submitting your affidavit to home school.
